Hi everyone, I haven't seen any thread about BHC Fall '14 so I made one! I am applying this February at Brookhaven community college for Fall 2014. I took Hesi last year for trial and I will be taking the Hesi for real again this February and I have been studying really hard this Winter break! Goodluck everyone, if I do not get accepted I have plan B which to go ahead and try to apply in UTA.
Almost finished in all precourses needed just Micro and death dying this Spring but they are not counted this application so I am hoping to do well in Hesi!
It most likely will be at Methodist Dallas. I had most of my clinicals there.
I bought a rollie bag and then never used it. I usually ended up just bringing the textbook for the class and a notebook to take notes on. 1st semester I did print off the power points the first few weeks and wrote little notes on them but seriously, you will go through TONS of printer paper and ink if you print out the power points so I stopped doing that.
With pre-clinical it usually is Monday and Tuesday and they split everyone up so half of the class goes in the morning on Monday and Tuesday to skills lab and the other half goes in the afternoon on Monday or Tuesday. I would assume that is how they will do it for you guys too but they could have changed how they do things. Again, pre-clinical is only for the first 6 weeks and then you will start actual clinical in the hospital after that on your assigned clinical day.
You can get your scrub bottoms anywhere you want. As long as the color is the same. The scrubs they have at the bookstore don't fit everyone. It's not realistic to expect to buy the pants there as well. I'm start third semester in August and will be one of the students to come speak to you at success camp. Buy new balance all white leather shoes. I got mine at academy for under $50. I only wear new balance outside of school as well and these hideous white ones are the most comfortable pair I own. You're first semester clinicals won't be 12 hours. You'll be on the floor about 8 hours. I'm happy to give you guys my email at Success Camp if you'd like. Good luck you guys. Get ready for one hell of a ride!
IMO the best drug book is the Mosby's 2014 (or you can get newest) it has IV solution compatibilities, IV push admin directions, safe dose ranges (if you have Shupe, you better know those!). I have a few different drug books. I can bring them to success camp for you guys to take a look through them. If you guys have any questions get a list together and post it on here. When we come on the 20th we can go over all of it. Be proud of yourselves. You worked hard to get here but it's time to amp it up! Also, something to keep in mind, treat your clinical days like a job interview, you never know;)
We'll I had taken them when I was at Texas Tech, but I didn't know if the were the same or not. But Nancy cleared it up for me today and said my credits had transferred for the other classes I had mentioned. But what about the classes for semester 2 like pharmacology and stuff, have most of you taken those already?
Yes, everything that was rewarded a point I've taken.

As far as supplies goes, what do we definitely need to get?
Will we stay with the same 10 people throughout the program and will our clinical day stay the same or change each semester?
Are rolling bags really that practical or just obnoxious?
You talked about a drug book, are there any other books/guides you suggest we get?
How many weeks is each "semester"?
...Thank you!

you need a stethoscope, pen light, scissors, a pill cutter would be handy. A rolling bag is not obnoxious. For fundamentals, you need a binder, the book, a dictionary (to look stuff up as you go, I have a pocket one),a drug book, and a fundamentals review book to follow along. If you want to shove all of that in a backpack and kill your back, by all means go ahead. I think 98% of the people in our class use a rolling bag. Especially when you go to the hospital to pick your patient. You will not be with the same ten people and you won't have the same clinical day. You need to adjust your life to be ready for a constant changes. Sometimes an instructor can't make a class and she may want to make it up another day. It happens. It's possible, even if you have children. My advice, if you don't HAVE to work, don't. It will make your life much easier. I'm very thankful for the support I have.
Bring a calendar to success camp to jot down dates and times, they may give you due dates for major papers at that time or change your clinical dates etc. just because your schedule on econnect say one thing doesn't mean your clinical instructor won't change it... My first semester we started clinicals 3 weeks before everyone else... We also ended two weeks early... Be open minded and flexible and if you can't get out now.
I think we are doing well. We made it through our first check off and 2 quizzes. I'm sure it will get worse as our first test approaches on the 19th, but they told us to just try to think one day at a time. It doesn't really work that way, but even with all the family drama I have had the last few weeks I'm not jumping off the roof yet.
