This is a forum is for anyone applying to Brookhaven college ADN program for Fall 2017.What tips can you offer? Any challenges? How was the dosage calculation exam? Any tips for the critical thinking exam and the interview? How many points are you applying with?

Hi, I didn't do as well as I had hoped on the CT exam.. it was not really what I imagined to be "critical thinking". If yall don't mind, what are yalls application points - total or step 1. I have 35!

They just started that critical thinking thing in the fall, for this spring semester, so I can't help with that unfortunately. However, I have let one of their classmates know you're interested and she should be replying soon! í ½í¸Š

Hi!

I'm the one Kendra mentioned...by the way she is way knowledgeable and very helpful. If y'all go back and read previous threads, you can see what I mean :)

I'm a 1st semester student and was part of the first group to take the CT. As y'all know the exam is worth 15 points so you'll want to try your best, even though failing won't necessarily disqualify. I will say that it is a little hard to study for the exam as it is made up of clinical scenario questions that test your judgment. Lots of ethical questions too. Questions like "you overheard a coworker discussing patient information, what would you do?" You'll also have questions that are more in the lines of going through your chain of command. Do a search on this site for critical thinking questions. I agree with an above comment, not really something you can study for. Just go your first instinct. Follow the process of elimination if you don't know the answer !

Thanks for the info! I have a question regarding the Hesi, do you have any material that helped you or that you recommend? Congrats on being 1st semester student, I was wondering how the schedule is. Do you have clinicals once a week ?

The HESI book that is sold by HESI is the best source. I also bought a HESI A2 study guide book that was good for questions. In first semester you will go to clinicals one day a week after the first 7 weeks.

Do you go to school M-Thursday or how is the class schedule? I work at a Dr office Monday - Thursday and I know I'm going to have to quit once in the program, have students been able to cope with part time?

It can be any day of the week, just depends on your schedule. There are some Saturday clinicals, and when you go to pediatric clinicals it is possible that you'll have a Sunday clinical as well.

In your first semester you will have a lecture day, a lab day, an open lab day (not required but highly recommended), a tutoring day (again not required but highly recommended), and then for the first 7-8 weeks you'll have a clinical lab day at school and then the remaining 7-8 weeks you will have clinical.

I know some people that have held parttime jobs while in the program, but it's not recommended if you can avoid it. I know some people that only worked during breaks and some that found time to fit a few shifts in during the week, but that's typically after first semester.

First semester is the time to figure out what works for you and what doesn't work especially in regards to your study habits and how much you can or cannot take on. You should also keep in mind each semester requires a certain amount of volunteer hours as well.

Thanks for the information, I know the program can be competitive every point counts! Do you know the overall points that qualified you for acceptance last fall?

I finally calculated my points and its is 35.1, please somebody tell me if it is good enough to get in.

From what I can tell the minimum amount of points to apply with is 27, with that said, you're 8 points above the minimum which is quite a bit, but there is no way to tell whether you'll be accepted or not. The interview process is also worth points so I would say your chance of getting an interview is high (don't quote me). You should definitely look into scheduling a mock interview in the career services center in the S building in order to prepare yourself for the interview. You can always wait to get the interview email to schedule this but I highly recommend it if you are selected for an interview.

You guys!! I turned in my application today! I feel like I've been preparing forever, I'm so excited my application is in - now the waiting begins! (Sorry for all the exclamation points, I'm just super excited!)

I took the critical thinking today, I got 10 points. I was kind of disappointed in my percentage (68%) but was told this is about average. The questions were almost all ethics-based scenarios.

I applied with a total of 43.7 points.

Does anyone know how many applicants there typically are?

Congratulations!!! Your pretty much guaranteed in with those points! I saw on a previous post that it was 100 applicatiants. Not sure how many are applying this time.

I honestly don't know. I applied with 36.5, but not sure how much was awarded to me for the essay and interview. I will add that they accept more candidates during the fall so the point range of acceptance may be wider.
