Breastfeeding after c-section

Published

How soon after mom gets to the RR, are they able to breasfeed at your respective facilities? Do babies have to go to observation nursery for a length of time? Are babies whisked away right after the section, or is dad able to keep baby with him providing infant is stable?

How is it done at your birthing center?

I like the policy of rooming in for healthy babies. We are trying to work toward things like that (breastfeeding and encouraging rooming in) We don't have couplet care though. Mom and baby have separate nurses. (though couplet care sounds like a good idea as well) Even for babies that room in though..they do have to be brought to the nursery form 0600 to about 0900 for when the peds make thier rounds. I don't know why they can't assess them in the room and speak with the parents at the same time. Maybe that's too time consuming? *shrugs* They also come in for a bath but I know many nurses who will just bathe and assess the infant in the mothers room if the infant is rooming in.

Another sign I'm in a rural setting . . . the same doc who delivers the baby is the baby's doc. So, the doc makes rounds in the morning and sees both the mom and babe. We don't have pediatricians up here. We have general practice docs who also do deliveries.

I do remember now that after my youngest was born in the "big city" hospital, my ob doc had nothing to do with him and there was a pediatrician there. That was very weird for me. That a doc could care for you and your baby through your pregnancy and suddenly have nothing to do with the baby.

I have to keep reminding myself that I live in a different place.

I am thrilled to see progressive thinking in the L&D forum. I am not an L&D nurse but am a mom & was overall pleased with the birth of my son though with a few bumps along the way. He was delivered by C-section after 29 hours of unsuccessful laboring & my biggest complaint was that even with apgar scores of 9 & 10 he was wiped down, suctioned, goo-ed (eyes) & wrapped in a blanket before I even laid eyes on him. I had waited 33 years for that very moment of my life & wanted nothing more than to hold him to my chest & "inspect" him. Or at least let my husband hold him close for me.

My husband accompanied him to the nursery where it was discovered that his glucose level was 39. My husband (who is also a nurse) states that the nurse began gathering & assembling a tube feeding when he interrupted saying "he needs to nurse". They then allowed my husband to hold our son to my breast & nurse (my arms were still Jello) while I was in recovery. Bless them!!

I leave the baby right there on mom's tummy . .. I do dry the baby off but mom is touching and looking. I defer the eye meds and Vit K until later.
