I'm wondering if any of you may have a nervous stomach (I guess it could be termed IBS but I live in denial of it :p)

I really didn't have a huge problem with this, but now that things have kicked up a notch this semeter in acute (critical, ICU, ED etc) I find whatever I eat first thing is not good. I've tried oatmeal (made w/rice milk or water no diff) I've tried those bars on the go things...either cereal type like nutrigrain or oatmeal bars, with a banana. I tried a smoothie with banana, rice milk, peanut butter, nope...stomach cramps.

This is super frustruating b/c on the weekends I'm really not a breakfast person (bad I know) and I'll have something around 1130 or even 1p...most times it's a reasonable "lunch" thing like pasta, sandwhich, leftovers...sometimes it's crazy like pizza and my stomach is fine! This past weekend b/c I had to study for the cardiac exam I actually loaded a bowel with tortillas and salsa topped with cheese! :lol2: my husband commented "great breakfast" :D I smiled and corrected him it was lunch :D :D ...but it didn't bother my stomach. If I would have tried that today, I know I would have been sick. It seems whenever I have to eat something either before clinical or lecture (doesn't matter stomach is nervous for both) I get cramps.

Anybody relate that can help?

Why don't you wait till the first break you get, and try eating then?

I can't eat when I just get up, if I am going to work. (again, have no problem with it when i'm on days off...could eat ANYTHING for breakfast in bed on those days!!:lol2:) (I think it's because I am in no rush to go out, and can enjoy the food!)

I don't have IBS, am not nervous, just that on work days, I'm in a hurry, & I find it easier to get up and go, and just drink loads of water on my way in to work. Then when I've been at work for an hour or so, I'm hungry and eat some breakfast.

Just a suggestion, it may help your digestion!

I am the same way. I buy those powders you mix in bottled water. It is south beach diet "tide me over". Keeps me from starving until I can eat something. I like the strawberry banana flavor. I'm not dieting but the powder is suppose to suppress your appetite, so it works well for me. actually tastes good too!

I hate eating breakfast too. I don't have a nervous stomach, but ugh, eating at 5:30am always makes me nauseous.

We don't usually get any breaks until lunch, so I found I would get lightheaded if I didn't eat at all. The only thing that works for me is a generous spoonful of peanut butter spread on a piece of white bread. Fold it over and I can eat it in the car. Bland, but filling. Maybe it's the protein in the peanut butter.

Oh yeah, and the numerous cups of coffee swigged so fast between call lights I burn all my tastebuds anyway!

Something I do a lot for my six-year-old son is this: put some milk in a blender with a banana, peanut butter, and some Ovaltine (for the extra vitamins). Blend it up, and you've got something fairly filling, nutritious, and it can be put in a to-go cup so you can chug it on the way. Oh, and it's pretty darned yummy, too.

I have a very sensitive stomach as well. I am also not a big fan of a early morning breakfast.

In the mornings, I cannot tolerate anything anything with roughage (cereals, breakfast bars, muffins, etc.) or anything that contains fresh fruit or caffeine.

I do tolerate bad foods though. Something high in suger and/or fats.....go carbs :anpom: I can eat donuts, cake, candy bars, white bread with butter and honey, and so on.

I don't know why, but those foods do not trigger my IBS. They give me a temp "boost" of energy until lunch and then I seem to be able to eat a healthier meal.

I go with yogurt, PB on toast, a lunchmeat sandwich, a leftover portion of dinner from the night before...etc. I go with something bland, and usually have some caffine on the way(usually pop)...i know, bad way to start the day, but it does kickstart me up.

Also, I hope you meant to say bowl full of chili and etc....otherwise we're gonna have to start a whole nother ER thread....

I have a touchy stomach also. I can't have any dairy, or wheat products in the morning. I end up eating pasta, subs or something like that about 30 minutes after getting up. otherwise I am sick all through morning classes. i make whatever the night before and reheat it or eat it cold.

i've had chronic gastritis for years. something that always helped me until i had my gastric bypass surgery was ginger capsules. i got crushed dry ginger capsules from gnc and popped two of those every morning and any time i felt nauseated. ginger is a natural herbal remedy for nausea. you can also drink ginger tea. you can either buy it or make your own by steeping a couple slices of fresh ginger in hot water. i add either honey or splenda to it. i used the capsules mostly because i can't tolerate the spiciness of the ginger in my mouth.

Can you tolerate dairy products? Yogurt, for instance.

No fruit juice or caffiene. I have had this problem and found that boiled rice was about the only thing that would not bother me. So I bought the tubs of rice pudding. You can get some that are not high calorie.

Good luck!
