Boosting Moral

It seems like our ER goes through cycles of low moral and general bad attitude. We are in one of these now. Lot of staff leaving which makes us very short staffed which makes moral much lower. We have 24 open positions right now! Managers are calling daily begging for help. We are working short everyday. Management will not get there butts in there to help us. It just sucks!

Does your ER go through these kinds of cycles? Any suggestions to pull us out of this funk quiker?

Form a nurses group and present ideas to management. If it's a complaint...have a solution, etc.

Food....chocolate usually works :)

We were short the other day and the director bought pizza for all. Well I am pretty much vegan. But I certainly never do pizza. He is trying to make things worse by clogging up nurses arteries. Killing them off. How tactless of him.

I'm sorry you felt his providing lunch was tactless of him. I'v never seen an ER nurse or Doc refuse the artery clogging delicious pizza in my tenture and doubt a bowl of carrots or celery would bring any smiles to that majority, or boost moral.:yeah: Perhaps instead of expecting the majority to change because you are vegan....have him order salad along with that pizza and then you can be happy too.

As far as the "tude"...perhaps you need some protein in your diet, you sound rather bitter....:twocents:

And PS: Vegans have their own health issues too and have been known to drop dead suddenly or have co-morbitities that kill them.:uhoh3:

What the hell does pretty much vegan mean???????????

Ha-ha!!! I love traumanurse!!!

I don't eat red meat and prefer to eat healthy but when our boss buys us pizza, I always just eat the cheese. There's always a cheese when pizza is bought in mass quantities. I also always take it as a gesture of appreciation which it is intended to be....much like when someone brings candy. I prefer to not eat alot of refined sugar but,mmmm..... Do pretty much vegans eat chocolate?

I am so sorry for you. Chocolate would boost my morale. Cheesecake even more so.:wink2:

Yikes!! I'm one of those that bring in the goodies to boost morale....homemade cookies and cakes and always, but always, made with good old fashioned butter.

They've always been appreciated...unless the other nurses are tossing them behind my back??

Home made is always appreciated. It shows thought and genuine caring. Most managers have a small allowance they can use for calling in pizza and other unhealthy food. But home made has so much more sentiment behind it. And usually it is far healthier than pizza

Doesn't sound like whining to me. Lots of people appreciate the gesture but don't appreciate the food when given junk food as a "reward". Next time junk food is brought look around at how many people pass, or eat just a token small amount. Although the majority of us flock to it like pigs at a trough. 46yearold isn't alone in her sentiments.
