Book: Nurse Anesthesia SECRETS

Published

Well

As many of you know, i bought a bunch of books to learn more about the profession over the last few months. This book is awesome.

Written by Mary Karlet CRNA PhD; I have learned more in the first chapter than I have learned in the last 3 months doing anything else, its awesome.

In anycase, who else has read this book or used it and what did you think? Much of the information about Anesthesia machines is 100% new to me so im not qualified in anyway to evaluate the information (though it is interesting!).

anyone else read it?

Thx a lot for a valuable information you all wrote here. It would be mostly appreciated if ISBN # of these books are also posted here.

happy reading!

Thanks for the welcome darian. MmacFN, you are correct in that every job has it's routine and boring moments. The general consensus is that anesthesia has a lot of routine. A popular description of anesthesia is that it is 95% boredom and 5% terror. I personally don't buy into this at all. CRNA jobs vary alot. Some do sedation for colonoscopies, or cataract, or podiatry cases all day long. Other's live by the seat of their pants doing level 1 trauma and burns. That's where I'm heading next. And there's lots of job that fit in between their somewhere. Just a reminder that you are making the ABSOLUTE right choice to pursue a career as a CRNA. I hope I never change my mind about anesthesia, even when I've been practicing 30 yrs.

Currently, I am an RN student doing rotation in Med-Surg/OR. I plan on going into Nurse Anesthesia after obtaining my BSN, so I am wanting to read up on anesthesia while I'm still ahead. What would be a good source that perhaps Santa could put under the tree for me?

Specializes in SICU--CRNA 2010.

I would focus on critical care nursing materials for now. That is the base to build upon later as you prepare to apply to CRNA school. There are alot of good books out there, but most would probably be a little beyond what you need right now.

All through RN school, anytime I was in the OR, I would definitely get up at the head of the bed next to anesthesia. Talk to them while you are in the OR, get advice about a good ICU in the area to try to start out in.

Once in an ICU, after you start to feel competent and meet the time requirements, start studying for CCRN. Studying for that exam really helped in the interviews.

Good luck with the adventure
