BOE Misfits

So we are under the BOE, which means someone on the Board has to oversee us. Traditionally, no member wants us, BUT it went to the Head of Special Ed. As we all know, every Board member is uniquely unqualified to supervise us, but this is how it is for now. Our Supervisor who is part of our union (not sure why) has no Admin privileges, nor does she even see herself as an Admin (unfortunately!) My questions are: how is your chain of command structured? If you have a Dir of Nursing, how did that happen? Is your immediate Supervisor in your union? And how are you recognized by the BOE when important nursing issues occur? Ultimately I want her job when she is ready to retire, and want to have my ducks in a row when it comes time for battle!

We have a head nurse at my district who is here mainly to liaison with all the outside entities that we liaison with, like local nursing colleges, the BOE, and the public health department. We are overseen, however, by our principals, who do our evaluations, and the assistant director of student services, who apparently overseas everything else. So neither of the people who oversee us are medically inclined. I'm not sure about the union thing, as I'm only part time right now and I don't get to be a part of any of that. The BOE is currently making changes to our state to make school nurse certification a thing again, but that's not to say they think we should make more money...at least not yet....

I'm not sure if you are talking about your state's Board of Education or your specific schools "Board". Our School Board (made up of elected community members) oversee's our superintendent and business manager. The super is over the elementary and secondary principals and I am supervised by the elementary principal. I am the only medical person in the whole district, so no, I don't have anyone medical supervising me and they have admitted they have no idea how to evaluate me. no unions around here.
