Board of Nursing NCLEX application process

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hello,

I will be graduating in December from a BSN program. YAY!!! On average how long does it take to receive clearance from the Board of Nursing to take the NCLEX? Essentially, how long after one graduates does it take to actually sit the NCLEX in this state?

Thank You

Subscribing so I get the replies too. :) Also, one thing I'm confused about is the BON application and the NCLEX application. Which comes first? Do we submit both at the same time or do we need the BON approval before submitting the NCLEX application?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Remember you are not applying for NCLEX but to be a licensed nurse. NCLEX is just a part of that application.

If you trained in the US and especially the state you applied application to then you should be OK to also register with Pearsonvue and they will send ATT once BON OK application you can then arrange to sit the NCLEX. If trained outside the US then we recommend that you wait to register with Pearsonvue as there is a delay on getting eligibility

I began the process July 31, 2009 and did not get to sit for the NCLEX until the second week in October. The BON did not respond to my requests for an application (they only accept paper applications). I would suggest driving to their office in Baltimore and picking one up in person. Then after I submitted everything the BON office did not staple the two parts of my application together and apparently that caused another 3 week delay in the process.

Be ready to make a zillion phone calls and emails. Almost all my emails went unanswered and most of the Board Members voicemail boxes were full and would not allow me to leave a message. I hope that my experience was an exception and not the rule. Good luck.

Rookie question here from someone who will be starting nursing school in January. What state should you apply for a license in if your nursing school is in a different state than where you live? Does that matter? Does your license only cover you to work in that state? If so, do you have to get reciprocity if the facility where you want to work is in a different state (and is that a complicated process)? For example, what if a Maryland resident graduates from a nursing school in Virginia and wants to work for a hospital in DC?. Thanks for any guidance or insight!

If you are going to be working in a Compact State, you should take the NCLEX in the state that you will declare your primary residency and you will be able to work in any compact state. For the example above: Live in MD, school in VA and work in D.C. it is your choice. You can become licensed in MD and pay to be licensed by endorsement in D.C., but this costs a lot of money. If you definitely plan on working in D.C. I would just go ahead and register through D.C. Once you have a license in one state it is not difficult to get a license by endorsement somewhere else.

Doing some research, would like to live in Atlanta relocating from the UK. But first, whats a compact state? Want to start the application process, anyone worked at Northside hospital?, what are the general payrates especially for over 15yrs experience?:)

Hi guys, i need to ask something. Does MD BON still accepts TEOFL exam for endorsement. A friend of mine called the BON last week after he received his TOEFL scores and the BON told him that they're not accepting TOEFL anymore and that he needs to take another english exam such as OPI. In their website it says there that "a score of 26 is passing in the TOEFL IBT;" Does it mean that i can only have a score of 26 on the speaking part? I'm a little confused. I'm also planning to apply for MD endorsement and dont know which English exam to take. Hope someone could help me.

Does your program not give you any direction or support on this matter? Check, because this may be already in the works for you. My school facilitates apps, background checks etc. Doesn't do them for us, but helps walk us through the steps, and I *think* has apps to the BON.
