Did anyone hear about or see that scathing article supposedly written by a former student about the nursing program?
I did not see it but two women in one of my classes were talking about it. The jist of it was that BMCC gladly takes TONS of money from pre-nursing students every semester knowing full well that only about 16% of them will ever see the light of day in the nursing program! Nice!
Anyway, the women said that only a short excerpt of the article was ever printed but the full "underground" version was floating around somewhere. Fascinating! Such intrigue!
In all seriousness, though....that is total BS if they do in fact make boat loads of money off of all the pre-nursing students who will NEVER get into their program - ever. Pretty lame. At least use some of that money to pay more nursing profs, expand the nursing program, etc.
Anyway, sorry for the rant!
AMEN Larosiliere7! I had a really good preclinical GPA for the evening program (all A's and one B from ten years ago), but I missed it by .07 of a point. What really upsets me is that they save spaces for union members with lower gpa's (trust me they do). I am now forced to apply to other day programs which means I get to quit my job during a recession. Not to mention the ridiculous cost of these other schools. How wonderful for me!
I need to put in my two cents here. I am a college grad taking my pre-requisite sciences (AP I/II, Chem, Micriobio, Nutrition, etc) at BMCC for an ABSN program with all the pre-clinical nursing students who are working toward getting in to the BMCC Nursing program. To accuse BMCC of taking students money or engaging in any kind of deception is ridiculous...not only is the program pretty damn cheap, and I mean cheap, but it also has a WELL KNOWN reputation of being a highly competitive program.. If you chose to take your prereqs and apply to nursing school at BMCC without researching the amount of students who apply/average grades/cut offs/etc then it is really your own fault.
Many of the pre-clinical students in my classes talk about the nursing program like it's a sure thing -- meanwhile they have B or C in a class (or several), which means that they have not done their research or are not in touch with reality! Bottom line is, you need straight As, or a 3.8-4.0, to secure a spot (although I heard they are adding an entrance exam which may throw a wrench in the machine)..
Some of the students in my classes (all of whom are pre-clinical) lack either the academic ability or discipline to follow this path and, at times, seem as though they were socially promoted from high school. Despite this, the class averages are HIGH because the teachers love grade inflation and curves/extra credit/give test answers in reviews and things of that sort...They make these As quite achieveable, in my opinion.I don't mean to sound so obnoxious but I went to a really hard, really expensive undergrad and BMCC is a *dream* compared to it (did I just call school a dream?).. If you have previous credits with poor grades, they'll let you waive them entirely and pretend they never existed.. BMCC can be unorganized and infuriating (like all CUNYs), but let's call a spade a spade people! Look on the bright side, you can probably get in to almost any BSN program with those 3.5's, which is a stellar GPA regardless of the BMCC issue.
EDIT: I just realized I was responding to posts from years ago. Kirham - this post was NOT directed at you. I did hear from a classmate who is in that union that they get garaunteed spots which, I agree, seems unfair! Good luck, you will get in to tons of schools with that GPA!

Thanks elleny. I agree with you because I have been in some courses where the students have a "high school attitude" and I don't remeber acting that way in undergrad. Once a girl actually answered her phone and began to speak! My undergrad was also very expensive as well and I am looking into a cheap alternative. Bmcc is a good program, but u just don't like their admissions practices. I will apply to the spring again, but I also applied to Nyu($$$$$$$$) and Suny($$) downnstate. I will apply to pace for the fall. With your undergrad degree you should def consider an accelerated program if you can take the time off(day program only).
By the way for micro you should take beaupierre. She was very tough and had me scared in the begining. But if you can handle her then you'll learn a lot. True, she does grade you for eveything from bringing your book to class to answering questions, but I still got an A

I'm actually applying to NYU also, I'm just taking the pre-reqs at BMCC..My B.A. GPA isn't high enough for downstate what with the large applicant pool and major competition :-( Im worried about the money too, but New York City's options are limited and so competitive that I'll have to make due! Thanks for the advice on Micro...registration starts on Monday and I'll be taking AP2/Micro concurrently so good teachers are a must! Let me know when you hear back from NYU/SUNY, I think you've got a really got shot!

im starting bmcc in january but under the 24cc program i want to pursue the nursing program after how much chance do the people now attending BMCC think ill have to get in?
did anyone attend the 24college credit program as well?
im worried because of ive already taken test to get in and i passed all of them but fear thier disorganization is a problem a lot of things they told me weren't true already but im trying to get in anyway.
if anyone has advice let me know im attending a "registration workshop" tomorrow (which i think is stupid, we should be able to apply without a workshop but whatever)
thanks
I have a BA from another school and BMCC only accpeted 17 credits i still have to take chem, a & p, micro and bio even though i took them at my former school. the nice lady in advisment said that i will only be allowed to take one class a semester (whcih can take up to 4 semesters or 2 years) and if they offer it in the summer becuase one class is required to take the other, which really doesn't bother me because this way i can take my time, concentrate on one class at a time and pass with all A's. However, I am just curious if the classes they accepted from my other college will effect my gpa or will i start off with a clesan slate and a gpa of 0.00??? i forgot to ask them that question. also will my transcript from BMCC show the classes taken at my other school even the classes not going towards nursing? someone please help i want to decide wheather or not i want to attend bmcc in the fall. thanks!

Hi,
The classes they accepted from other college will affect your GPA only if those classes are the ones required for prereqs in nursing (examples are Eng101,201/Gen Psy/Dev Psy...), otherwise the nursing dept will ignore any other subjects and will just calculate overall GPA based on the prereqs. I had a B+ in English101 from other school and I asked them to take it out from my credited subjects as I wanted to retake it to get an A (which I did). Your BMCC transcript will show other classes that you took but it will not show the grades that you had. When you apply for nursing at BMCC and you had some of your prereqs from other school, they will ask you to get a photocopy of that transcript as well as your transcript from BMCC.
I hope this info helps.
Best regards,
Dee

I just have One thing to say"I regret ever going there.I worked hard to get a 3.55 GPA (without some of the books) , and I got denied. They never told me there was a cut off point. They are only interested in making money off the students.I can't wait to transfer.Anyone who is serious about their future and education..and who does not have a 3.78 should not go there. They also have to consider the fact that some students have easier prof. than others.Im not saying this to make excuses.Maybe I should have pushed myself a little harder, But I know many private schools that would be too happy to accept. The only problem is that Im not entitled to financial aid due to my status in the US.If I was, I would have gone to a more prestigous school.
