Bloodborne Pathogens

So, I covered the last six weeks if the school year last spring when the previous nurse left and then was hired full-time for the upcoming year.

Next week begins our pew planning week of meetings before the kids arrive. I was told last week that I'd be "teaching bloodborne pathogens" to the staff and was handed one of six buckets located all around campus which contain the gloves, disinfectants, etc to clean up blood, vomit, urine, etc.

do your schools have these BBP kits on campus and what is in them? Should I add PPE to them such as gowns and mask in case there is ever a big exposure risk?? Are there state requirements where you live because I certainly can't find them for GA.

in my 15 mins of "teaching" I also have to share what I want the staff to know about the clinic in general. I'll want to direct this primarily to the new staff but what are the main points you would want to touch on if you had the entire facility's bended ear for just a few minutes??

And that's pre-planning, not pew planning!

In my district, all staff does an on-line based BBP training annually. The company it comes from is called SafeSchools and this is also how we do annual sexual harassment and some other topics as well. HR monitors who has completed.

Custodial staff does clean up, never teaching or paraprofessional staff.

The only time I might get involved is if someone has a possible exposure, I may be called for advice.

Does your district have a BBP exposure control plan? NASN ( National Association of School Nurses) has a bookstore with a good paperback book of model exposure control plan that we wrote our policy off of.

So are you also supposed to monitor who has completed? chase down those who didn't attend?

It's a lot to cover in a short time. You might have to go with what they've given you this year but maybe plan for a different approach for the next year.

As for the faculty, I would try to find a polite way to beg them not to send kids down for every little mosquito bite and use some judgement. Good luck with that!

We are a private school so I have no district or county to follow! But I would imagine that there is some type if state audit from time to time?!? Honestly, I'm finding lots of places where the ball was dropped before I came and I'm spending time (& school $) getting supplies updated. On top of that, our school admin retired so in working with a new admin/principal who is fantastic but his guess is as good as mine on some of these questions!!

I just had training on BBP this morning, Friday I do the BBP training for our school staff. I was hired last Dec after 3 months as long term sub so this will be my first time doing the OSHA training for the staff. We have a short video and written plan to go by for the training. Good luck and enjoy your new job!

Our district also uses the program thru SafeSchools - our AP handles who has watched it. Teachers do not clean any body fluids - our custodial staff is trained in that - the most a teacher will do is cover the area or block it off to others so it can be cleaned properly.

We have our first staff meeting the first week of school - the principal gives me as much time as I need to go over whatever I want. I remind the staff to be sure to come see me if they have any questions regarding the videos - our district has the staff watch a video on BBP, allergic reactions & EpiPen use, diabetic info. I quickly review how to use the epipen - I have several trainers that I pass around. I let the staff know where the important medication is kept in my office - EpiPens, juice in fridge for diabetics, glucogon for the diabetics, diastat for the seizure kids etc. I give a quick review of our AED, where it is located, how it works etc. I review our Oxysure - location, when to use, how to use. I always have a handful kids that I let everyone know about & what treatment they would need - those that carry own EpiPen, diabetics etc.

In my District the training is online and it's up to the staff to go online and look at the material. We are held responsible for it because every year we have to sign paperwork saying we reviewed the info. If you message me your email address I can send you a bloodbourne pathogen training powerpoint based off OSHA standards.
