Better Option: Pregnant in nursing school/after

Nurses General Nursing

Hi all,

I was wondering is it better to become pregnant during my last year in nursing school and deliver after I graduate. Or should I wait until I am finish with nursing school and then try to get pregnant. I heard that people won't hired you if your pregnant since your a new nurse and all. Also, what happens during your last year of nursing school? More clinicals, would being pregnant interfere with this. Is it better to be pregnant during nursing school or pregnant and trying to get a job as a new nurse.

I already have a son, he would be 5 by the time I graduate nursing school. I don't want the gap to be so far apart. I will also be getting my BSN and plan to go onto graduate school after 2 years of experience and I definitely don't want a new born by that time.

Thanks

I personally would wait until after you've had a nursing job for a year to get pregnant so like one poster said you'll have FMLA to protect you. Pregnancy in nursing school on purpose seems like madness and pregnancy while job hunting is only going to turn prospective employers off. If you can wait, wait.

I had a baby my final semester of nursing school. I almost had to sit out that last semester on bedrest, but luckily my baby decided to cooperate. He was due march 12, which was the first day of my spring break. Well, I took my advanced med/surg final on february 19, went to lunch after, and went into labor that night and had the baby the next morning, a Friday. I was back in class on Monday for my last 5 weeks and did end up graduating on time. It can be done, but not without a ton of help. My husband and family watched the baby and my 3 year old for me while I went to clinicals and class. I could not have done it without them. If you don't have help, don't do it. It's hard enough to get through school without added stress. You have to decide what is best for you and your family.

I am in you same position, my son will be five when I graduate from my BSN program and it seems like a big gap but when I think back to doing undergrad classes while pregnant I'm going to wait. I was exhausted and had a harder time concentrating because of the hormones. Plus I'm really healthy and thought I would have an uneventful birth between semesters and ended up having a placental abruption at 32 weeks, 2 weeks before my finals, so I had to take I in those classes and take the finals the next semester. Not to mention have a preemie/newborn is a full time job. With as important as it is for our futures that I finish school and get a job it's not worth the risk to have a baby a couple of years earlier but have to take even more time to finish schooling and find a job. JMO, Good luck with whatever you decide!

I would probably wait until you are working for a bit. School is exhausting and so is being pregnant!

I am graduating in 3 weeks, just found out I’m 8 weeks pregnant and freaking out because, by the time I pass the NCLEX I will be showing and I’m almost positive no one will hire a new grad/ pregnant. ?

This is baby #4 for me, my boyfriend is sooo happy, but I have so many mixed feelings...

I was 5 months (visibly) pregnant when I interviewed for, and was offered, my first job out of nursing school. Don't mention it, they can't ask.
