A little background here.. I have earned my degree in 2005, got my RN license in 2008 and stopped working at 2010 for personal reasons. 2016 now and I wanted to go back to nursing. Technically I can work because my license is current. I still renew it even though I'm not actually in the nursing field. Thought That starting off by reading books is a good idea. Particulary medical surgical. I thought that it covers a huge part in nursing education so I would like to start reading this area of nursing. With too many books out in the market, will you please let me know what's the best option? What universities are suggesting? If you have suggestions to read other books related to another subject like Pediatric nursing, Psych, etc.. I would like to hear that too. Need to update! Thanks!

I think any med-surg or fundamentals of nursing book will do. However, I think your best bet would be to apply for something similar to a nurse re-entry position....at the very least, explain to your employer that you desire an extended re-orientation period. Good luck to you and welcome back!

thanks! There's a litttle struggle applying if you don't have a recent experience. I'm not quite sure if it's only here in SD , SoCal or everywhere. I guess my inquiry is which book presents the subjects better..the content more understandable. .. Etc.

My suggestion, since the responses to your question are rather slow in coming, would be to check with Amazon and/or Barnes and Noble, and search for medical-surgical nursing. As the list populates, read the reviews that were provided from students who purchased a specific one (of the most current textbooks, of course), and decide from there. When I went back for my ASN, that fundamentals text was so darn thick, like 2000 pages, that I gave the thing away.:nono:

Check local nursing school websites to see which medical surgical books are their required textbooks. Also, consider taking a refresher course with a medical-surgical clinical component in order to brush up your nursing skills and network.
