Best Clinical Exposure for ICU, CV-ICU, PACU

World Canada

Hi wonderful Canadian nurses!

I am currently doing my BScN at York University. I'm lucky enough to be at the top of my class, therefore, I get to specify my preference for my integrated practicum. Before I came to Canada, I was a PACU nurse and Operating Room nurse (Cardio&Main). When I graduate from York, I would like to become an ICU, CV-ICU, or PACU nurse. My question for everyone is:

1. Which has the best cardiology center: TGH, St Mikes, or Sunnybrook?

2. Does TGH, St Mikes, or Sunnybrook train student nurses in their ICUs and PACUs? (York said they will try to get us placed into the hospital of our choice even if it is outside their catchment area).

3. Do I have a chance of getting hired in a hospital where I did my practicum? Which hospitals in Toronto do this?

Please guide me, oh wise ones! :notworthy:

Specializes in geriatrics.

Jobs have been scarce around the GTA for 7 years due to cutbacks. Certainly try to find a placement. However, there are no guarantees because the hiring is based on funding.

Be flexible and willing to accept a position wherever there is an opening. New grads have few options these days, especially when you're seeking a specialty area.

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

Like Joanna said, jobs are scarce. I wouldn't count on getting into a speciality right out of school. Many jobs go to internal applicants with seniority and experience. Best of luck in your studies.
