12/12/05 I'm interested in moving from Wisconsin to California, where are the better paying hosptitals? I currently work in a VA Hospital. Also where are the most reasonable places to live? I hope you can help answer my questions.

What is "with Benis"? And which hospital do you work for? Please let me know. You can PM me if you want. I would really appreciate this information.

I think she means "benis" = benefits. Per Diem, on the other hand, do not have benefits.

In the LA area, would someone recommend the cheaper/safer places to live and work? And which hospitals would you recommend. Any suggestions please from californians?

Try the east San Fernando Valley neighborhoods such as Mission Hills, Sylmar, Lakeview Terrace, North Hollywood, Arleta, Panorama City, and Sun Valley. The hospitals near these communities are Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Olive View Medical Center, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Kaiser Panorama City, and Glendale Adventist Hospital.

BTW I am a native Californian who knows Southern California remarkably well.

To all california prospectives: If you are just getting your license and live in the midwest or east and you think that california is everything you ever dreamed of, think again. Just because you may have watched the OC or Laguna Beach on MTV, doesn't mean that it is anywhere near what they depict ca to be like or that you know what you're getting yourself into. I've seen this too many times: a young person wants to get away and move to california, when they find the reality of it they move back. Yes, you can survive renting, but renting gets old and you will eventually want to buy a home. Buying is also possible with a nurses salary, but not in orange county well not with just a nurses salary alone. The IE isn't what non-californians expect when they move to ca-its ghetto and you'll be labeled as living in the "909" or most recently "951". So if you think that the californian lifestyle is for you think again. Do you want to save money, ever live in your own home, go on vacations or constantly be watching your budget. Don't get me wrong, i love ca and ive lived in orange my entire life but you must be very prepared and know what the truth about the situation here.

Good Luck to you all

Well I wanted to live in California before I saw that show. I went on a vacation in December to Laguna Beach and I loved it. I also went to dana point, anaheim, irvine, mission viejo, and laguna hills. I lovd all of the areas.

I want to live in California before I buy a house. I might not want to live there the rest of my life. I just want to live there while I'm young. I know its hard to buy a house on a single salary out in California. I wouldn't buy my own house out there unless I'm married and have kids.

I can guarantee you even if California doesn't work out for me that I will NOT be moving back home. I'll just move somewhere south.

How is California ghetto? Im not really sure what you meant by that.

Hi there,

Can any of you explain to me what the "CA" hospital is ?

Thanks,

Well, luv2shop I was exaggerating and I guess that compared to orange, corona and riverside are ghetto but they really aren't just not as upscale in general. If I were you and I am sort of like you, being 20, and I really wanted to move to CA, I would live in an apartment in Huntington Beach. Trust me that area is great for young people, lots of life and its beautiful. Good Luck in your endeavors!

CA is the official abbreviation for California.

To me a ghetto is a residential area where people put bars on windows and doors due to theft. Also where there is street violence.

Usually there are few homeowners living there, just renters.

Corona and Riverside have nice neighborhoods, low income areas with good working people, and undesirable ones with lots of good people and troublemakers who ruin it for the rest.

Huntington Beach is NICE!

I plan on moving to CA and living in an apartment for a few years until I meet some people and figure out what I'm going to do with myself. I'm still young, only 20 years old and the only thing I know is that I want to move as far away from PA as possible. I've been looking into the San Diego area and have seen some apartments for 800-1000 a month which is a reasonable price for me. When I"m done with school next year I'll have my ADN. I may continue on to get my bsn but I'm not sure yet. Does anyone have any advice for me? Or does someone want to tell me all the bad things about california? I've read most of the posts here on negatives and positives of california and the positives outweigh the negatives GREATLY!

The best place to live in SoCal is in Orange County -particularly the beach towns. Nursing is good too.

Wow, a lot of range in comments about how good/bad CA is. I live in San Diego County, have for almost 13 years. I've lived in San Diego proper and in North County (where I am now). I agree it is expensive, VERY. BUT, the money is good. I'm just a nursing student now but my clinical is at the VA in La Jolla. It may also be referred to as VA San Diego. While you can't get a 1 BR apt for under $1000 in the area the hospital is in, you can live 15-30 mins away and get a one BR apt for $700+. It may not be on the beach but most towns are within 30 to 45 mins of the beach. The VA is VERY close to the beach. I would stay in areas north of the 52 freeway and near the 5 and 15 freeways. UTC is the area they call surrounding the VA hospital, expensive. Carmel Valley, Del Mar...all very expensive. La Jolla...VERY expensive. BUT, there is UCSD right next to the VA and there are lots of students that are probably looking to share a condo with. If you are young and single, this is the place to be. I don't like OC or LA, too yuppie for me. I like SD because it is 10x less yuppie than OC, more laid back, more of a beach town. Oh and a warning...Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach are all major party towns and the crime is higher there, I would steer clear of them, only visit if you plan on partying on a weekend.

And the VA is hiring! They love transfers (its the easiest way to get a job there because you are already "in the system")! And the VA in San Diego is said to be the best in the country (heard that from patients, not my opinion cuz I've never been to another VA).

Good luck! And PM me if you need any other information.

You guys keep referring to orange county as yuppie and I thikn someone referred to LA as yuppie too. Can you please elaborate on what yuppie is because I don't get it... lol
