I'm starting to get a little overwhelmed. So I have to ask, was your gpa below a 3.0 and you still got into nursing school? Did you have a lot of work or volunteer experience? What do you think helped you get into the program?
My gpa was very low my freshman year of college. So at the end of my sophomore year, I finally started to do better and raised my gpa. My junior year and senior year I made the deans list each semester. But, it's still not above a 3.0.
Is there hope! lol..???
i got into a BSN program with below a 3.0. I have a 2.9 GPA in my prior degree, 3.5 science prereqs, and 3.4 overall prereqs. I also have work/ volunteer experience in healthcare and a lot of other things my school was looking for like a lot of PC know-how and Spanish skills.
I was waitlisted and eventually accepted. I was also accepted to an ADN program which only looked at 3-4 prereq classes and nothing else
Yes, like you I made above 3.0 in my junior and senior years (12 years ago), my overall GPA ended up being a 2.98. I also made mostly A's and a few B's on my prerequisites (last few years). In my essay question, I addressed that my undergraduate GPA was not as strong as should have been, and essentially I had grown since then and my recent grades are more representative of my motivation and dedication to their program.
Good Luck!!
I think that it depends on the school, as they all vary. I believe that most of them look at your pre- req courses. Fifteen years ago when I applied for nursing school, I had a GPA of 3.46 and 3.5 was required. However, I believe they looked at whole picture. I took the hardest courses during my first semester. I was accepted during the first pick. Six months later, they selected more students and some had a GPA of 3.0. I think they look at not only your GPA, but application essay and your interview. I know of some students that didn't get in when they first applied, however kept plugging away at school & re-applied. So when they graduated from the diploma program they were very close to getting their BSN.
I've known students who flunked A&P twice and still got into the program. But....they had to wait a cycle or two (they weren't accepted the first time). There is another problem you will need to contend with, however, and that is this: if you had trouble with understanding the material in your pre-reqs, you may have trouble with the material in the program. So, ask yourself: were my grades reflective of my understanding of the material, or were they as a result of test anxiety or some other reason? Do you feel confident you learned what you will need to know from classes, such as A&P? Don't get me wrong, though, I've seen people who got strait A's throughout their pre-reqs get into the program and crash! They were excellent at memorizing and regurgitating the information, but had a great deal of difficulty with the critical/analytical thinking required in the program. To succeed at the nursing program, you need more than just a good memory -- you need to be able to think through the material and understand the why's, how's, and exceptions.
Years ago, lol, I got in nursing school with NO gpa. I had not taken a single prereq, and still got in, mostly because they had a unexpected spot open. They called me up a day before start time and asked if I would be interested in starting this year instead of next (as I had planned) and of course I said yes. That meant I had to take EVERY SINGLE prereq while in nursing school........oh boy was that fun! Anyway, that was my experience.

Okay so I should just contact the school and ask them about the above? That sounds like a good idea. Thanks.
