Do you guys get called every day you have off to work extra? If so how do you handle it? I have worked extra, switched back and forth from day shift to night shift, but I am tired...and I hate to say no all the time, but I am tired of being called every single weekend!

Several options here. You could change your number, or screen your phone calls. I did that when I used to get called. Worked like a charm. Also, stop feeling guilty and feeling like you have to go in, their short staffing is not your fault or your problem

My prior employer called me frequently for months after I had quit and moved out of the state. In that case, I did answer a few times to let them know that I was no longer an employee. They kept calling, anyway.

Ha, this happened to me a few months back. They were notorious for being short staffed and didn't replace people who had left. So, I got a call looking for me to be part of a second call team. I wasn't the only prior employee who got called either. They probably left all of our names on there so it wouldn't be obvious that they were dangerously short staffed. She copped a little attitude with me when I told her I didn't work there anymore, lol.

In the UK, we just turn round and say NO. The law is on our side in that we can invoke the Human Rights Act if they get too pushy, in that we have a right to privacy.

Don't. Answer. The. Phone.

Plausible deniability is on your side.

I get called all the time as well however I never answer. They usually offer doubletime if they really need nurses and that's quite a lot of the time.

I will accept that every once in a while but not too much. Money isn't everything. The more you work the more likely you are to get overtired and risk making a mistake. I never work if it's not doubletime.

Just edited to add that I always turn off my phone before going to sleep because it's not anyone's responsibility to know when I am sleeping and not to disturb me.

During the day I usually have my phone on Do Not Disturb. I can always call back.

I started working for a hospital pretty much right out of high school and was still living at home. Now, I had told them that my contact number was my cell phone number but had filled out the home phone on the application as well. Wouldn't you know that when my cell phone was dead one morning they decided to use the home phone (my parent's phone). Dad had some choice words about being woken up at 4am:nailbiting:.

when i was floor nursing i NEVER answered my phone on my days off!! straight to voicemail!! LOl..

Its gotten to a point with my employers that they stop you while you are at work, and ask you. If I do overtime its on my terms when I clock in, and when I leave. I'm very firm with this, my employers know it. I have flexible hours when I do overtime, if I decide to do any at all. That's just the way it is, and they can deal with it or not. Besides, I'm sure they'll find someone, if not, themselves.........Stand firm, you'll gain respect! Happy! Nursing!..........
