Before the Morning (Failed CRNE three times. what now?)

World Canada CRNE

Published

I just received a bad news. My nursing career is over. Yes, I am no longer one of you, but I feel a need to share my story. I have failed the CRNE for the third time and honestly, I don't know what is there left for me. I know things happen for a reason. sometimes, i just think that GOD is being so unfair. Throughout my nursing school, all i did was to do my best both theory and clinical. I have received praises being a "very good" Graduate Nurse. But then again, all has to end with an examination that I can't seem to pass even though I have put my thoughts and heart on preparing for it. At some point, I think of myself as a dumb individual, up for no good. If nursing was not meant for me, why did HE made it possible for me to even complete my Degree Program? I have so many questions to GOD right now. I have prayed hard for that moment of finally receiving a letter with the word "PASS" on it, but instead a phone call saying I have failed on my third attempt and had to wait for a letter containing my options.

Nursing Has always been my dream and I can't see myself pursuing other career in life. I don't think I can handle another 4 years of schooling or even the strength to even try to put my life back on track. I know that God has a reason for why I'm going through this test right now (one I consider the hardest test in my life, so far), and probably there is more to come. I have so much faith in him that in spite it all, I still look forward to that one morning of waking up from my sleep and the pain, the sadness, the sufferings are over. I know that HE works in ways unimaginable. I know that he hears my prayer and in his own time he'll grant those prayers. But for now, all I needed is some sort of encouragement from you, whoever you are reading this post right now.

I still thank GOD because I have my life, I am breathing, I can still appreciate all the good things he had created. As long as there is tomorrow, I will continue to fight a good fight!

i feel u ecclessia... i have failed my last attempt... and im completely lost. Im in huge depression now since i never failed in my life except this CRNE exam. I cnt believe it... i dont know what to do now. i need help as well

hello.i have the same situation as you I tooked the CRNE last feb 2011, and its my third time, and I failed for just three points. It would be great if the CNO would show which specific area I failed, because when I did the exam, I was confident with all my answers. Why did this CNO dont want to show and explain my errors...it so annoying.

yeah..i feel for you..its so depressing, despite of all the preparation and and long time reviewing, We got failed!!!!damn!

as read from soem of tth thread here that we are going to have refresher course, from where?which school?, I dont know!Apealing to CNO for the 4th time is also possible if you have valid reason.with respect to RPN, you can apply for assesment for RPN and take the exam, as long as you are still in your safe pratice.

I'm an IEN by the way!

I was reading your post and truly feels the fact after 3rd attempt.

I was not in your shoes but I understood how you felt. The exam is challenging even though the passing score is 97% each time, but the passing rate for internationally trained nurses are only 67-70%.

I would suggest you to call the college of nursing of your province and make an appointment with the officer. And figure out what other options you have in order to request a 4th time to write the crne? Personally, I haven't heard or known anyone in this situation, but there is always a possibility in life.

You just got your result back, you probably do need sometime to calm down and accept the fact of failure on your 3rd attempt. Take enough time to clear up your mind. Then, find a quiet spot, sit down and refresh your memory. How did you perfrom the past three times? Look at your result, compare the score each time. Find out where was your weakness? Did you find a pattern when you wrote the test 3 times?

I really want to help you, provide you tips. but first, you need to start to answer those questions.

Keep positive even if it's hard to do so.

I have the same situation with you...it seem like your post is a year old already..i have failed just recently..and i still feel depress and frustrated in failing the crne.

what are you doing right now?are yu pursuing your nursing career, still?are you studying now after failing 3x the crne?please give me an advise..thanks!

Are you new to this site? There is an option for searching other people's comments/threats.

If you read the yayh's , I did a search and it seems like the person is trying to write the NCLEX.

but anyhow, no matter CRNE or NCLEX, it's not one easier than the other. Different format exam for different country. But some hinks for you, the econmony in States is really bad, even new grad can't find full-time job. so you could imagine the nursing job marketing in states.

anyway, Good luck with all your decision.

Hello guys. I am also one of the few who have failed the CRNE 3x, and most recently, the exam on February of this year. I'm just wondering, how lenient is CNO with giving out a 4th chance in writing the exam? This is my only chance in practicing nursing here in Canada, and I am at lost of what to do..

@ulid, ecclessia and jmarc99.. What are your plans now at this moment? I am also from Ontario, and have no clue on what to do next..

hi there, I also graduated from Ontario and failed the CRNE 3x. I relocated in BC and made an appeal to CRNBC and granted me a 4th writing. I took a remedial course and tutorial prior to my 4th writing last Feb 2011 and unfortunately, I still did not pass the exam. I was really frustrated and upset from what happened but I can't do anything anymore....life must go on. I'm not giving up yet and I am still going to try for my 5th writing. So for those of you who have failed 3x, don't feel helpless because you can still request for a 4th writing. If you need info on how to go about it, please feel free to contact me.

are you an internationally-trained nurse? Despite the fact of writing 4th time, it must be devastating to cope and preparing to re-write.

Was your score close to passing? Did you have a tutor / study group prior to write the exam? Tried to think ways that may could work for your next writing time :)

no, I am not internationally-trained nurse. I did my baccalaureate degree in Nursing in Ontario, Canada. Yes, it is really devastating but I can't afford to dwell on my failure and be depressed because I have a family to take care of. After all the hardship, sleepless nights studying, attending review class, I just can't comprehend and I have a hard time accepting that I still failed by 1 or 2 points. I am still hurting but I know that what I am going through right now will come to pass. It helps to know that I am not alone in this journey...thanks to all the people that shared their experiences.

Thanks survivor007,

how did you apply to write for the 4th time? is it only for applying on different province since your writing it at BC?

Yea, I would like to know this as well.. Did you write a letter to CNO about requesting to write it the 4th time?
Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

Being granted the opportunity to write the CRNE for a 4th time is limited to those with extenuating circumstances. It's not common at all. Changing provinces is NOT a strategy to obtain another 3 tries since the CRNE is a national exam and all 9 provinces and 3 territories that use it for entry to practice have the 3-tries-and-you're-done regulation. It doesn't matter if you wrote your first time in Ontario, your second in Manitoba and your third in Alberta, you've written it 3 times and the Canadian Nurses' Association has records of each attempt. Extenuating circumstances would include becoming ill or receiving a call regarding a family emergency requiring one's presence while writing the exam and having to leave in the middle, having had a death in the family or a motor vehicle collision or being victimized by a violent crime immediately preceding the exam that would cause the candidate to be distracted and that sort of thing. It would NOT include being poorly prepared, having a shaky command of English, failing to manage one's time appropriately, being too nervous about failing or any of the multitude of excuses that people could imagine.

hello jmarc99 and omd3,

I wrote to the CNO’s Board of Directors to make an appeal for a 4th writing but they told me that I can’t take the CRNE after 3 failed attempts. CNO suggested that I should go back to school and take the nursing course again and it was not what I expected to hear from them. I was really heartbroken and it took me a while to get back on my feet again. However, I was informed by one of the Case Management Coordinators that I can make an appeal for a 4th writing on compassionate reasons. Since my family relocated to BC, I contacted CRNBC and inquired if I was eligible to write after 3 unsuccessful attempts. I received a letter in response to my inquiry and they requested that I provide all necessary documents needed by the CRNBC’s Board of Directors to review my case (they will tell you exactly what to do after your initial contact with them). I registered with CRNBC, paid all the fees for assessment and waited for months to find out if they will allow me to write the CRNE again. I had to wait for almost 8 months for them to review my case. I received the approval to write the CRNE a few days before the deadline for registration. I was given an extra week to submit my application for the exam.

If I were you, I will contact CNO in writing and make an appeal on compassionate grounds. I don’t know what your circumstances were during the exams but there is no harm in trying. If you get approved, you get to write and if you don’t, then find another avenue to attain your objective.

My situation is worse than your current situation so don’t give up! There’s always an answer to all our problems and I can really relate to what you are feeling right now.

Cheers!

Survivor did they really do you a favor, you failed the fourth time! You wasted your time and money. If by a miracle you get to take the exam the fifth time, who would employ you ?

To the others, why did it come a surprise that on your third attempt you failed, you had a track record of failing 2 times. Personally I would have taken the refresher after failing the second time. Did the college make recommendations after you failed the second time.

Taking the NCLEX would be a waste of money in my opinion, if you don't have legal access to work. Why would someone hire you if you passed in a competitive market when you couldn't pass the standards in your home country?

The test is there for a reason, three times is an acceptable amount, you may not like this but nursing may not be for you.
