Bed Bath stress

 ADVICE PLEASE!!!!! I am a RN student who just flunked out on her 1st of 2 chances in Lab giving a bedbath due to a a case of severe nervousness! I do not attribute the nerves to not knowing how-to, but the fact that I will get kicked out of the program if I do not perform well based on one instructor's opinion. I have tried to calm down, but.... Please be totally honest/blunt with me. I was so nervous I did not get past the second eye before being stopped.

Thanks,

is this question really supposed to be in the critical care forum?

I spilled a small amount of H2O on the overbed table.

OMG!!! I think your instructor should be flunked!!!! Talk about nurses eating their young!

I would laugh if you weren't being so unfairly scrutinized. Practice, practice, practice, give her what she wants. Just know that in the real world, no one cares about water on a table (as long as you clean it up before the next shift comes on).

Take care!

Well I know I do more baths in critical care than I did on med/surg so why not?

Bed baths are not so bad. I do them daily in ICU and its a great way to asses your patient, as you see them from every angle.

I strongly agree with this!

Yeah thats true, you are right. I do like the discussion. I was so stressed about bed baths when I started. Now just roll up my sleeves and get it done. It sounds very stressful to have the instructor like the one described.

We have a woman on our unit who really goes at it with the bed bath. She gets out the water basin and cleans every nook and crevice of her patients. While some nurses just use the warmed wipes and the shampoo shower caps. My point is that everyone does it a little different. As long as you do it.

This sort of thing is what makes nursing school a joke in my opinion. Instead of working on things such as what a normal or abnormal QRS looks like or working a code or treating hypotension, they slam you with BS such as bed bath stress. Its almost embarrasing.

BS like this is why my nursing education was the worst years of my life. So glad I'm done.

Probably half the ways I do things now are different from what the shrieking harridan in the skills lab taught me!

OP, you should try posting this in one of the student areas for help and tips. :)
