Becoming an Army nurse? Or any Military for that matter?

Published

Hey all,

I'm one semester out from getting into nursing school (hopefully). Not an immediate thing, but I really would like to get some input on those of you who've gone on to be Army nurses, or any other branch. What all's involved? I spoke with a recruiter, but he couldn't really tell me much; and we don't have an AMEDD office anywhere near here. Thanks for your time!

For the ANCP program you need to be on active duty before you can apply. The results for FY 12 were recently released and the numbers are appox 1/2 then last year.

Actually - I believe there is a mixup on the above..

The ANCP is for civilians entering or in junior / senior year of BSN program with no military affiliation.

The AECP and FNEP you have to be affiliated and applying from within to meet eligibility.

Your right the ANCP is as you stated. The FNEP is no longer being offered an that is per the Colonel from HRC in charge of nursing accessions.

Actually, if he's going ANCP, he will enlist first. He'll commission only after he's passed the NCLEX. Congrats on the grades and the progress toward ANCP, joshdwarhawks! You're another step closer!

Question: if I'm not going to MEPS, when (around) and how will I enlist?

This is a good question for you to ask your recruiter the next time you talk to him/her.

You still have to go through the whole selection process for the ANCP.. MEPS (or in your case, the physical at Ft. Sam) is just one step in the whole application process.I'm not as familiar with the ANCP, but i think the jist of it is IF selected youre technically considered "enlisted" for the sole purpose of getting a paycheck.. and you'll then commission once you've graduated and passed NCLEX. Not sure if the timeline for ANCP coincides with active duty selections.. but if it does, that board is in November.

-Just a bump and an update-

Will be flying to Fort Sam Houston for a physical / tour in two weeks. Assuming I pass the physical, I will later attend MEPS to take the ASVAB and enlist as an E-3; will be an 09N. Thanks for all the advice you guys have given me. I just hate the wait!

Good luck, keep us posted!! And enjoy Ft. Sam. I second jeckrn's recommendation to visit the Center for the Intrepid -- awesome place. Be sure to visit the Riverwalk! I really like San Antonio.
