Become A Nurse Just To Be A Crna?

Does Anyone Think It Is Wrong To Want To Be An Rn Just So That They Could Be A Crna? Although The Clinical Experience In Icu Is Priceless.

"I've never had the occasion to visit an NP (for my own health), but when I was at the Gyn the other day, I noticed a second NP had joined the practice. And often if the MD is backed up, they will ask if you wouldn't mind seeing the Np or PA instead. I thought to myself, is the NP a nurse with 3 yrs of experience, all part time while rushing through NP school? I sure hope not."

In my ANP program, I probably did 30 or so female exams. That isn't enough to be an expert, but I ran across most of the routine pathology and was functional at annual exams and such. My wife saw a NP with our last kiddo all the way to delivery...it was very satisfying. I'm not a girl, but I would have no problem seeing a NP for such things.

hey mwbeah it went great i was extremely pleased. The only negative was the price of the bsn portion something like 54000 for the one year. other than that i think it is a great opportunity once u are accepted. u r promised a spot only once u work as a critical care nurse for 1 year u can continue onto the clinical portion. critical care can be pacu, or nicu it does not have to be micu or sicu. It is extremely competitive u must have really good overall gpa cutoff being 3.5-3.6 it is actually perfectly suited for me so iam definetly applying for may 06.

being a bio major from ny i have taken more than required for the program 1 year of physics, orgo, gen chem, biochem, micro, neurology etc. The director informed me that this was definetly a plus for me as long as i have good grades. i have nothing less than a B+ so things r looking good. He informed me that i should try and do good on the gre and do some volunteering in order to make myself a more well rounded applicant..he also said to shadow a crna which iam trying to do. I will keep everyone posted on my progress and whether i am accepted. thanks to everyone for the negative and positive comments they are a real motivator.

I was pretty sure you would have to have the year of experience, like I said it is a guideline that all schools must follow for accreditation.

Frankly, if I became a women's health NP I wouldn't be any more

prepared by my one year of med-surg and two years of ICU. Female plumbing is a whole different field.

Which is kind of my point. In that case, I would hope (or pray to God if I was her pt.) that she had a little more than a yr of m/s.... maybe some women's health experience? Ob, mother/baby, L&D???

Being in the Nursing profession now for the last 10 years has taught me a great deal of things. Being that you have the forsight to use nursing as the stepping stone is not wrong. But I feel that Nurses are truely different in the way that they care for their patients. We have the touch and knoweldge that comes from caring. If you have ever been at the bedside as an Anesthesiologist put someone to sleep vs a CRNA you will know the difference. The journey of getting a BSN may be your stepping stone but please do not use and leave the essence of nursing behind in your wake. Besides, the time you will spend in ICU or whatever critical area you choose may seem like a sentence in jail if it is just a stone for stepping. To sum it up, it took me 8 years to decide that I did not want to hustle up and down the halls of a hospital for the next 30 years.

thanks guys for your encouraging words. It actually turns out that im not gonna pursue columbias direct entry program since i was accepted into nyu medical school thank god! i am super excited i did not mention it before cause i was afraid of getting flamed by u guys. Now those concerned about me being an unsafe provider can relax. i actually had lost all hope since i was waitlisted at 4 schools then the acceptance. I actually still plan to specialize in anesthesia but in medicine not in nursing. Bye never to return again

so sorry to hear that you weren't accepted into the crna program. perhaps medical school will be ok. the long hours of residency that you'll have to do with huge debt over your head :crying2: will be tough. hopefully, you won't mind.

once again, sorry to hear your bad news... hang in there.
