First of all, congrats on passing! I've been watching your siggie waiting for results! :nuke:

Second, I see that you are going into L&D. That is exactly what I hope to do when I finally graduate some time around 2089.

Can you tell me what steps you took and are taking to get where you want to go? Thanks so much!

Thank you! It's such a relief to finally have NCLEX over with.

I don't really think I took any specific steps to become a L&D nurse. I actually wasn't interested in it at all until we had our OB nursing class/clinical. I had a fabulous clinical instructor who really instilled a love for L&D into me. My OB rotation was fantastic - I felt she really went above and beyond to make my clinical experience so great because she picked up on the fact that I was loving the rotation and was maybe thinking about going into L&D (before I even really knew myself). By the end of the semester, I was sold.

From that point, I spent some time on L&D during my summer externship with UCLA. Since L&D wasn't offered for our senior preceptorships, I chose OR. I had a genuine interest in OR, but I also knew that this would be a good selling point if I wanted to do L&D ( r/t circulating C/S, placing foleys, etc). Then, I had my OB theory instructor, my OB clinical instructor, and the OR clinical nurse educator (where I did my preceptorship) write me letters of recommendation to start job hunting out here in California. And the rest is history!

That's what worked for me. I don't know how it is in St. Louis, but it really seemed like everyone wanted to go into L&D, NICU, or mother/baby out here and I was worried that I wouldn't get in because of all the competition. I think you just have to be creative to getting your foot in the door, more so than just trying to become a tech on the mother/baby floor (because EVERYBODY wants those jobs!).

Best of luck!
