BCIT nursing Sept 2015 intake

Published

Hello all!

This is my third time starting a forum (aka my third time applying to a program...).

I am planning on applying to BCIT BSN for September 2015 intake.

Applications have already opened, but I am still waiting on marks. In my case, I have everything but my grade 11 courses (ha). I am currently finishing up Chem 11 and Math 11 because I had a C+.

....I guess grade 11 really does matter.

The deadline is April 1st. Here are the prerequisites as of January 2015:

*note: all changes are in italics

  • English: two years of education in English in an English-speaking country
    (previous requirement: B)
  • Chemistry 11 (73%)
    (previous requirement C+)
  • Math: one of the following:
    (previous requirement C+)
    • Principles of Mathematics 11 (73%) or 12 (67%) or
    • Applications of Mathematics 12 (73%) or
    • Foundations of Mathematics 11 (73%) or 12 (73%) or
    • Pre-Calculus 11 (73%) or 12 (67%) or
    • MATH 0007 (73%)

  • Academic Foundations requirement: Completion of 18.0 university credits with a minimum of (67%) in each of the following courses:
    • ENGL 1177 Academic Writing or a first-year transferable English composition course* (3.0 credits)
    • Anatomy & Physiology* - must have been completed within the past 3 years (6.0 credits)
    • PSYC 1101 Introductory Psychology 1 or an equivalent Psychology course* (3.0 credits)
    • General Education [PDF] electives at a 100 level minimum in at least 2 different academic disciplines (6.0 credits)

Feel free to share your story or concerns. I've found it useful to have a forum open for people to discuss their concerns throughout the process.

All the best to you!

Hi,

I had done my Anatomy and Physio in 2003, so I decided to take it again 2 years ago, so I was good on that front when I applied to BCIT this year.

Hi I am planning to apply for Jan 2016 intake, Is English 1177 academic writing a must credit?

Yes the STAR format is what I used as well for my questionnaire answers. it definitely helped me stay on track and using that format made my answers clear and concise. I highly recommend using this format as well for future applicants.

Sadly yes...well I took an English first year through a different university but made sure it was equivalent. The first time I tried to apply to BCIT last year, I tried the get the English first year requirement waived. I tried really really hard saying that I did a bunch of French academic essay writing courses (the structure of an essay is the same whether it's in English or French..) and that I also completed a degree at McGill and that I had to write multiple papers throughout my studies. but they didn't think that was sufficient...aka that I knew how to write proper essays haha ridiculous, but they have to weed out people somehow! so I just took an English first year course last year through Thompson Rivers online.

If you want a really quick and easy English course I took ENGL177 through athabasca which worked. However I also wrote to admissions to get their confirmation and uploaded thst email along with my transcripts when I applied. Good luck with your application and excited for all of us starting this August!!

Hi JOanie,

Thanks for your reply, I did not think to take that academic writing course. However, after I read your response, I think it is better to have it.

Thank you!

I'm turning down my offer from BCIT, so one lucky person is getting my spot :)

I am also turning down my offer from BCIT as I have been accepted into my top choice program. I hope someone here will be getting my spot :)

If you don't mind my asking, what is your top choice program?

Is there anyone work as a medical office assistant and got into the program?

Hi ipascu, I don't mind at all :)

I got into the UBC Masters of Occupational Therapy program. It's kind of bad.. but to be honest, I applied to nursing as a backup since OT programs have gotten so competitive. I applied to this back in January when I was still undecided, but after volunteering with both OTs and nurses this year I realized that OT was what I really wanted, so I was planning to reject nursing even if I didn't get into OT and try again next year.

Congrats to everyone who's going to be starting the program in August! Hopefully I'll be able to meet some of you in the future!!

I'm in the process of filling in the questionnaire and I'm not sure how much to write. Do any of you mind telling me how much you wrote for each point? Thanks!
