BCIT nursing Sept 2015 intake

Published

Hello all!

This is my third time starting a forum (aka my third time applying to a program...).

I am planning on applying to BCIT BSN for September 2015 intake.

Applications have already opened, but I am still waiting on marks. In my case, I have everything but my grade 11 courses (ha). I am currently finishing up Chem 11 and Math 11 because I had a C+.

....I guess grade 11 really does matter.

The deadline is April 1st. Here are the prerequisites as of January 2015:

*note: all changes are in italics

  • English: two years of education in English in an English-speaking country
    (previous requirement: B)
  • Chemistry 11 (73%)
    (previous requirement C+)
  • Math: one of the following:
    (previous requirement C+)
    • Principles of Mathematics 11 (73%) or 12 (67%) or
    • Applications of Mathematics 12 (73%) or
    • Foundations of Mathematics 11 (73%) or 12 (73%) or
    • Pre-Calculus 11 (73%) or 12 (67%) or
    • MATH 0007 (73%)

  • Academic Foundations requirement: Completion of 18.0 university credits with a minimum of (67%) in each of the following courses:
    • ENGL 1177 Academic Writing or a first-year transferable English composition course* (3.0 credits)
    • Anatomy & Physiology* - must have been completed within the past 3 years (6.0 credits)
    • PSYC 1101 Introductory Psychology 1 or an equivalent Psychology course* (3.0 credits)
    • General Education [PDF] electives at a 100 level minimum in at least 2 different academic disciplines (6.0 credits)

Feel free to share your story or concerns. I've found it useful to have a forum open for people to discuss their concerns throughout the process.

All the best to you!

I wish you good luck! I applied for the September 2015 intake of Langara's BSN program and if that doesn't work (hopefully it does!!) I will be applying to BCIT's January 2016 intake.

Last year, when I was still in high school, I emailed BCIT asking some questions and I received lots of info that wasn't on the website in response. You may find it helpful, but I hope it doesn't discourage you :)

"... usually students with a GPA of 3.0 have been selected in the past if they meet and/or exceed all other requirements and are deemed to be qualified candidates for the program with the best chance for success.

In addition to the specified 18.0 post-secondary credits, the program area is looking for applicants to have 12-42 post-secondary credits which can be in any area. So in total you should have 30-60 credits at a post-secondary institute in order to be considered a competitive applicant. Please click on the appropriate link to determine which institutes you could take the Anatomy and Physiology, English and Psychology courses (http://www.bcit.ca/files/admission/pdf/bsn_course_equivalencies.pdf) and which General Education courses are required (http://www.bcit.ca/files/health/pdf/bsn_general_education_requirement.pdf).

Having a good GPA is important and does help enhance the application but meeting all of the program's entrance requirements is the most important. The department seeks students that are well rounded individuals who will have the academics as well as the personality and qualities that are required for success in the program as well as in the industry. It would be a good idea to obtain volunteer experience as well. Most health sciences programs desire students working one-on-one with individuals in a place such as a Senior's Facility eg. Nursing Home. You can chat with the individuals, play games and read to them; basically spend time with them. This will also enhance your application. Obtaining a minimum of 30 hours is good but I would recommend completing as many hours as possible."

Hi everybody! It seems that they have also changed their admission requirements and are not accepting midterm grades for academic foundations courses. Is this a recent change or has it always been like that? I know a few people who applied last year using their midterm grades so I was just curious

Good luck on your application! I just applied to BCIT on January 19th. My status says I'm pending department review. Fingers crossed! I completed my academic foundations in nursing at Douglas so I have 30 post secondary credits. I saw on their website they want 6 credits of liberal arts, so make sure you have those. Psychology doesn't count nor does medical ethics in philosophy. English does so that is a good some to take. My gpa is 3.5 right now which isn't great because last semester dropped it. I also have a 130 volunteer hours with Fraser health. I hope I get in I don't even know if what I have obtained will be good enough :(. I just know BCIT is an awesome school. I am wait listed at Douglas college too.

Oh psychology matters as an entrance requirement sorry. Just not for the liberal arts requirement.

Hi everyone! I've also applied for Langara and BCIT for sept 2015. I am currently finishing up my academic foundations in nursing at Douglas, but because it's not a competitive entry for 2nd year I won't be waiting around to get in there. I currently have about a 4.0 GPA at Douglas and also have about 20 credits from first year science courses at SFU with closer to a 3.0 GPA. I have volunteer experience with Fraser Health at a Psych ward and also volunteer with Coast Mental Health, as well as a job with a part time position with the Canadian mental health association at a clubhouse. I am hoping it is enough to get into BCIT as my first choice but reading back through some of the threads here it seems very competitive. From what I have read Langara sends out offers within the next month but short listing for the non cognitive questionnaire for BCIT isn't until April... Wish you all luck, and hopefully when anyone hears anything they can post here for everyone!

I just submitted my application - does anyone have any idea what the timeline to hear back about anything is?

Good luck everyone!
