Hello all!
This is my third time starting a forum (aka my third time applying to a program...).
I am planning on applying to BCIT BSN for September 2015 intake.
Applications have already opened, but I am still waiting on marks. In my case, I have everything but my grade 11 courses (ha). I am currently finishing up Chem 11 and Math 11 because I had a C+.
....I guess grade 11 really does matter.
The deadline is April 1st. Here are the prerequisites as of January 2015:

Feel free to share your story or concerns. I've found it useful to have a forum open for people to discuss their concerns throughout the process.
All the best to you!
Hey Cyrene same with me they said my gpa was good but my post secondary credits were lower Than other applicants and my questionnaire score was below average. I'm wondering what I did wrong. The questions were pretty open ended.
For any future applicants reading this, make sure you have more than 30 post secondary credits. If you do have lower post secondary credits, make sure you ace the questionnaire as that is what made me lose my seat.
For those of you who saw my earlier post about completely screwing up my questionnaire, I am now wondering whether they fixed the original accidental submission.
Hi Rayanne, I would't worry about it too much, I applied with almost 40 credits and a high GPA and they said I did above average on the questionnaire and I still did not make the cut! Could anyone who got accepted comment on about how many credits they had? I'm debating between applying again for January with about 50 credits or just going to Langara's nursing program in September.
Sorry to hear you didn't get in ladies, hopefully next time!
I do have some advice for the questionnaires, I've done many of them as in person interviews, and have always been successful. When I was preparing for my first one, I was told to use the STAR format, and I found that keeping that in mind really helped. If you're not familiar, here's quick over view:
S - Situation - Briefly describe the situation you were in. Identify major players, basically the Who, What, Where, and When of it.
T - Task - State the task you were given. This is where you'll relate it to the question you were initially asked, whether it was solving a problem, achieving an objective, anything like that.
A - Action - Describe what you did. Pretty straight forward, remember to use "I did" type language, but don't leave out things that you delegated or that were part of a team effort either.
R - Result - What was the outcome of the situation? Include what you learned, and whether you accomplished the initial objective or not.
Sticking to this format tends to keep you focused and concise when you're talking in person or have a word limit like we did here. During in person interviews, I will often take a minute to collect my thoughts, make a couple notes and then speak, which has always been allowed. I'm not a person who normally takes any notes, but writing down a quick point for each S-T-A-R really keeps me on task as I tend to get rambley when I type or talk (as you can probably tell).
Great advice @craftymedic! That is very beneficial to know for the future and I will be memorizing that STAR technique. Also, great pointers for future applicants wanting into BCIT.
Penney, I'm quite surprised you didn't get in! My gpa must have been the only reason I was shortlisted, along with my volunteer hours.
Anyways props to those who made it! I'm thinking I'll just stick to Douglas college were I already have acceptance. I really hoped to get into BCIT but my main objective was to start earlier than January (that's when I begin second year at Douglas). Since I didn't make it into BCIT, I will be starting in January no matter what lol 😕.
I'm not getting any younger!!! I started this path at 21, and I am 26 now and finally starting year two in January. I guess it's just the wait that kills me most of all.
Penney, follow your heart. You will know in your heart the best route to take. Was this your first time applying to BCIT? If so it can't hurt to try again if you can cope with waiting again. Then again, if you've been accepted elsewhere that's great too!
Hi Penney,
To answer your question about the number of credits, I have over 120. However my GPA is not the greatest, I think around a 2.6 overall (thank-you calculus and physics), with an 87% average in the prerequisite courses for the program. I have wanted to do this program for some time so I also took relate-able university courses that I thought would help me out in the field, and did well in them (gerontology, nutrition, pharmacology, etc.). I've also worked in healthcare since I was 18 (I'm 26 now). I spent along time editing the first questionnaire, and as for the 90 minute one, I made sure to use examples/qualities from my life that would perhaps carry over into situations we may have to deal with as nurses (and also keep under the word count). I also know of another lady who graduated from BCIT a few years ago, she had the bare minimum number of credits but she had worked in healthcare for 20 years. I'm not too sure which parts of the application process they allocate the most points to. Just keep at it and be persistent, I'm sure you will get in the next time around :)
Hi,
I have about 150 credits, and my overall GPA isn't great...maybe a 2.8..unless they looked at my last 60 credits, than I would have around a 3.4...not sure if they look at the whole thing. I have been working in clinical health research for the last 7 years, so I am pretty sure that helped. It also helped me to answer the questionnaire as I've encountered many different situations through work and I could relate them to something really close to what nurses could experience with patients.. But overall I didn't think I had done well on the questionnaire since all my answers were closer to 150 words.. so I was not sure they were detailed enough.
So I think the more credit you have, the better? What courses you took probably plays a role too. My undergrad was in Anatomy and Cell Bio. I graduated a looong time ago..but since then, I've taken random uni courses out of pure interests..most of them in psychology and biomedical ethics, so I'm sure these looked good to them..
I applied to BCIT and UBC...UBC being my first choice, but still waiting to hear back (although I'm slightly torn now that I got an offer from BCIT... I've heard so many good things about BCIT, but also about Langara... I couldn't apply since my stats course was expired and I don't want to do it again. I thought about Douglas too, but I needed 2 english courses..and only have one..and again, don't want to have to do an extra one. I would have applied everywhere otherwise...because in the end...I want to be a nurse and refused to think that the school I go to will shape the kind of nurse I will become. I'm confident that I'll be a great nurse no matter where I go to school... maybe this sounds a bit overconfident... and maybe that thought will change after I try to poke my first patient haha

Hi J0anie,
Did you ask to write physiology and anatomy challenge exam when you were applying for BCIT?
Thank you!

Also have any of you been added to the fb group yet? It says I haven't been accepted yet but I'm not sure I did it right? Haha
