Bayonne School of Med or Holy Name Hospital?

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Hi friends,

I am applying to the nursing programs at the Bayonne school of medicine, and also Holy Name Hospital in teaneck NJ. Has anyone gone to these schools, or know anybody who did go to them? ANY info or opinions you ahve about their programs would be very helpful!!

Thank you and happy new year!:balloons:

Just keeping everyone posted...

I've been accepted to Bayonne pending I pass a math placement test and then take the corresponding math course this summer!

Meanwhile...I just recieved a voicemail from Holy name askign to schedule an interview!

So I am hoping an interview really does=99% accepted right now!

Meanwhile, I need to figure out how to miss work yet -again- for the interview...without getting fired.:uhoh3:

Congrats on the interview! I'm also thinking of applying to Holy Name. Can you give me any advice? I have a BA but its been over 10 years since I graduated do they still need me to contact my high school for transcript and SAT scores? Also who would be best to ask for references?

Thanks!

Hi!

Well, I graduated high school 7 years ago... I did indeed send my High School transcripts. I found my old guidance counselor's email online, and he said all I had to do was send in a written letter that authorized the sending of my transcripts to wherever. As for SAT scores, the funny thing is I never even sent them.. I didn't realize until yesterday when I was looking at the website again that it asks for them!! Uh oh! So I will go to the interview, and I guess I'll find out if they still need them. I assume they would tell me if anything was outstanding on my application then.

The bad news is I called the collge board company about SAT scores the other day because I needed them for Bayonne, and I was told it would take about 8 weeks to find my scores, and there was a cost of almost $50 to find and rush them to the school! So hopefully I won't need them...

In terms of references, I honestly can't say who is best. I would think the best person is someone who will write you a good one. :clown: But I asked my former assistant principal and social worker that I used to work with when I was teaching for references- I am on a friendly basis with them now, so it was nice ot have a "professional" reference from friends.

Good luck! Let me know if I can help any more!:lol2:

Oh, and also... study for the NET! That is the best advice I got on this thread, and it's true. Buy the book and do the problems! It gives you a great idea of what the test will actually be like.

Thanks for all of your advice. It's really helping me with my decision. I'm going to go to the open house this week to get a feel for the program. Also, do you know if Holy Name helps with job placement? Also, do you know the range in starting salaries?

I don't know anything about if they help with job placement, but jtjames might. that is also a question that you could ask at the open house.

As far as starting salaries, I understand it all depends on where you work, what kind of hours, what kind of work you do etc. Sounds like a job for a search on the internet to me!:nuke:

Hi All! I also took the NET on March 8th and my interview is scheduled for this Tuesday. Wish me luck! I've been out of high school for 8 years. I sent in my HS transcripts and SAT scores for the application. If anyone has any pointers for the interview, they would be GREATLY appreciated. I've been calling all my family members and making them ask me interview questions all weekend!

**I bought the NET Study Guide, a Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam prep book and borrowed a TEAS Test Study Guide from a friend. I'd be happy to send them to someone who will be taking the test. They were extremely helpful.

Hello,

I graduated form Holy Name Hospital School of Nursing in 2005. I don't know anything about Bayonne Hospital's Nursing School. I can say however that I recieved a really excellent experience at HNH. About the job placement, many of my class mates began working at the hospital as unit clerks and nursing assistants and then easily transfered to a nursing position once they graduated. In fact the hospital administation met with our class to discuss the options of employment during nursing school and after graduation. There is also a Student Nurse extern program there for the summer, after you have completed your first year. I ended up working somewhere else after graduation, but I am now going back to Holy Name. It's a great school, you work very hard, but I believe you will come out with a solid foundation to start your nursing career if you go there. About 3 years ago I know that the starting salary was between $27 and 29 per hour, but it may have changed since then. They also offer shift differentials, and salary increases if you become certified in your area of nursing. Good Luck!! :nuke:

Hi all,

Brand new to the forums and had to post in this thread even though it is a couple of months old. I too, like a previous poster, graduated from Holyname SON. I was one of the graduates in the 2007 class that ranked #1 in the country, which really made the school happy btw. I work in the hospital and my starting salary was $28.50 per/h which is standard here for all new grads. Shift diff rate is $4 for even/night, $2 weekend, $1 charge.

To answer a posters question regarding transcripts I can only report my experience. I graduated highschool in Ireland and a LOT of college credits here is the USA, but no degree. I was required to get official copies of all my college course, but that was it, and as far as transferring in the grade as I was only going for the diploma I was able to transfer in ALL appropriate course work, even though some of the classes were taken in the late 80's early 90's. Saved me thousands.

Another point, the school is VERY competitive. The best advice is study for your NET. Most of the students here that I spoke to were in the 90+ percentile on the NET. I could be wrong, but my understanding is they won't even consider you if you don't score in the 70+ percentile. Truth be told, you need much better then that as most of the candidates score high.

As far as cost, the program is more expensive then some, but by no means is it the most expensive, or anywhere near. Currently, the 2-year diploma program with books runs about $29,000 total. As someone mentioned, they will happily hire you as a per-diem PCT at about $13 p/h (beats McDonalds) once you successfully complete fundementals of nursing in your first semester. Once you graduate, pass your boards, and haven't screwed up as a PCT, the hospital will probably hire you.

In my experience the graduating class is usually around 40 and the hospital, depending on needs, will hire 12 - 15 of those grads.

Good luck. If I can help with info don't hesitate to contact me.

Can Anyone Tell Me How To Study For The Tcs/2 Exam? Thanks!

Is that the test they have you take for Bayonne? If yes, then there is no way to study for it! It's like an IQ test...it was quite ridiculous.

More like stupid ridiculous than hard ridiculous..though some parts of the test are so subjective you can't really call it easy. It just isn't a very good measure of actual intelligence, in my opinion. I've heard other students who took the test say the same thing too.

Good luck! You will probably do just fine.:D
