Baptist School of Health Professions (BSHP) Spring 2012

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hey guys. I noticed there isn't a thread for this BSHP program. I just got my admission letter by email a couple minutes ago! :D

Is there anybody else who will be going to this school in the Spring?

I am getting very excited! Only worried about Financial Aid... I am hoping they will go over that kind of information at processing.

I hear you about the financial aid. The cost of tuition is the only thing I'm worried about - I love the schedule.

I have already come to terms with the fact I will be in some serious debt when all this is said and done - even after grants!

Something I *just* noticed... the program consists of 5 semesters instead of the usual 4. I wonder if they offer classes in the summer, too. Or if they take a break in the summer and it's a regular Spring/Fall thing only.

12 days to processing day :)

I'm fairly certain that you can make that "5th" semester a summer semester. The classes meant for that semester are core curriculum classes like sociology, a math, lifespan psych and some others. I think there are 5 classes like that. I have a few done already from SAC, and I may, if possible take the rest of those type of classes at SAC this summer (so much cheaper!). But I believe they offer those few in the summer as well.

^^ That's a relief! I've finished all those core classes at SAC, too. Thanks for the info :)

The summer session is for completion of core classes, Eng 1301, Lifespan growth and development, history, college algebra and ethics. (I think these are the right ones). I was hoping since I already have all these that I would be able to move up my other classes but I do not think they allow that. I am so excited and getting ready for Nov 4.

^^ cegr, I'm a little confused. Do you mean that we still have to re-take those classes even though we've already taken them at a different institution? I really hope not.

schmoodle,

I just graduated from BSHP in April and it was a pretty good program. There are 4 Nursing semesters broken up into 2 8week courses. SO the first semester will be Foundations in Adult Med/Surg Nursings or Foundations, i.e. (How to make a bed, vital signs, blah, blah, blah), Common Concepts of Adult medical/nursing Nursing. Or Commons. Thats it. That is your first semester. Really easy stuff. Then Pharmacology, Mental health, then they split the class i n two for Pedi/OB-GYN then Advanced (need to study), Management and Professional Review. I came into the program as a previous EMT, Army Combat Medic and working in a baptist hospital as a phlebotomist and general tech. I couldn't keep my eyes open in the beginning. It gets better as you go. You don't give drugs till the second semester/and then I believe its just oral stuff. You don't mess with IV drugs and infusions till you get the IV class. Which they spend about 1 day teaching you how to do it then let you fend for yourself. I digress.

4 Semesters of Nursing stuff and 1 semester of general education. Phsyc, Math, English Blah, blah blah. If you are starting in the spring, like I did, you are stuck, no skipping allowed for those people who have the classes taken already. I had taken all but Sociology/Math and did those through the school (online, expensive but easy A's) because the VA paid for all my schooling so money wasn't really an issue with me. If you start in the fall you have a schedule where your gen ed classes fall in a wierd time slot and you could jump ahead to a different class, but I don't feel that we picked up alot of students that way. Maybe a handfull. You also pick up LVN's, who all look at you like they are better because they are nurses already (not to offend, just personal experience) and then you will get the washouts from the semesters ahead of you who do not pass. It is a cornicopia of peeps rolling in and out of the course as you move along.

I don't like to read and I have a social life so I sat in the front of class took notes and studied the notes/handouts. I graduated with a 3.4, but refused to kill myself in school. Not what I am all about, and Now I work in the Surgical Trauma ICU at University Hospital and have never been happier. I didnt work for Baptist because like everyone else in the country healthcare cuts have hit everyone and they did not offer me a decent wage, regardless of experience and by the time I grauated I worked for a Baptist Hospital for 3 1/2 years and they still considered me a new nurse. When I asked for an increase in the off they told me this was a fixed wage to all new grads and was set by Tommye Austin (CNE of all 5 hospitals) Which was fine, so I took my skills elsewhere and administrative people I still talk to at Baptist tell me that the people who made that decision made a very bad one. I digress.

You will have a luncheon/ meet and greet with all the CEO's, Unit Directors CNO's of all five hospitals and they will fill your head with visions of grandeur about their hospitals and how bad they need you and how great it is to be a part of the team, but in the end you need to look out for yourself. Start your networking early. If you want to work for baptist, try and get a job with them, if you want to work somewhere else then try there. Get your foot in the door, be a brown noser and most of all be confident in yourself. Don't worry about what happens on processing day. That is one day of many. You get an ID and your schedule and your parking pass. Big whup. Start thinking about what you really want and work on that.

I hope I can give you guys a view into what happened to me during my 2 years at BSHP. Any other questions that you can think of let me know.

Thank you, jboogieRN. That gave me a little more insight into the program but I'm still a little confused about the general education courses. From what I understood about the program, the nursing courses are Spring/Fall only and the general courses semester is offered in the summer.

I've completed all the general ed courses listed at SAC already so I'm wondering if I'm still required to take these courses again. I'm afraid I didn't understand what you meant by being stuck if I'm starting in the Spring. I assumed I'd attend classes in Spring 2012, Fall 2012, Spring 2013 and Fall 2013.

Sorry guys, this is all a little confusing. :uhoh3:

Schmoodle,

You do not have to take any core general education classes over again. If you have them with a "C" or better you are good. BSHP doesn't care where they come from just get them done.

What I meant was the during that summer class time where others are taking gen ed classes you could potentially jump ahead a semester by taking courses that are also offered in the summer. If you have something that you are doing in the fall of 2012 that they offer summer of 2012 then you could potentially move up a semester. Or you could do nothing in the summer. whatever you would like.

I had an error in my previous post. I started in the fall of 2009 and finished in the spring of 2011. So its 1 semester short of 2 years. So if you start your schooling in the fall, and your first two classes (semester 1) takes you to christmas, and then the next two classes take you to april/may time frame if you are off in the summer then you are "stuck" they wont probably offer PEDI/OB in the summer because that is what you will be doing in the fall. But I do believe that you can take pharmacology in the summer, as 1 class, and mental health starting in January so you don't have to do them concurrently. But to my knowledge Pharm is now an online course. I think I took the last in classroom Pharm course that they offered. But Im not sure. All info is subject to change at any moment. I am telling you what has happened to me as early as April 2011. Since then any policy, course work, or allowances made are purely speculation. There is a .pdf of books, and when you will be in certain courses but it is vague and really offers little into the specifics.

You want to know why I chose BSHP over SAC?

No white uniforms. Didn't want my goodies showed off to the the general public through stupid white uniforms. Viva La Navy Blue!!!!

^^ cegr, I'm a little confused. Do you mean that we still have to re-take those classes even though we've already taken them at a different institution? I really hope not.

As jboogieRN said, you do not have to repeat your core classes. I was just saying that I hoped since I had all of my core classes completed, that they would not make me skip summer (not take any classes) and let me move up my fall classes so I could graduate earlier.

Thank you jboogieRN and cegr for clarifying. I was starting to freak out... at least this lessens the debt I'm going to have to pay off after school. :p
