Banner Nurse Fellows Program

Published

I interviewed for the nurse fellows program through Banner about three weeks ago and still haven't heard anything! I was talking to another girl there for an interview who said that her friend (I know, I know, don't listen to anything like this, but I can't help it!) got a call a week after her interview offering her a slot. Has anyone else interviewed and heard anything?

I don't know why I'm so freaking out about it. I'm already accepted into Mesa to start in January (I deferred) but I WANT TO GET INTO THIS!

So I just got the call yesterday to interview next Tuesday, Nov. 6th. I've already been through the interviewing process last year and got really nervous during it and froze and I'm pretty sure that is why I didn't get accepted into the program. So I'm trying again!!!

Any advice on how to stay calm and not let your nerves get the best of you? I don't know why, but I get really nervous when I have to speak in front of a panel. I think I am well prepared for their questions as it doesn't seem they change them. From what I gather, they want to hear that you are prepared to take on the responsibility of an accelerated program and that you are totally dedicated to just the school. Both of which I am.

Any thoughts? I guess my big thing is how to stay calm and not let your nerves get the best of you. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

I graduate tonight from the Banner Nurse Fellows Program! So the most important thing to remember is YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!! It seems like yesterday I sat in the auditorium at Gateway and went through the mandatory orientation talk that precedes the application process.

How not to get nervous? Actually, a little bit of nerves are a good thing. It keeps you "safe" - both in an interviewing context and as a nurse. So get over that "hump" - it is ok to be a little nervous.

Here is what you must remember - the panel wants you to get in their program. Seriously - the wackos generally weed themselves out. So being nervous is the least of your problem. You should see some of the people they must contend with.

So long as you are sincere that you can accept the responsibility of a very aggressive program - and clearly convey that - you will be fine! Some deep breathes - look the panel in the eye - and just answer the questions. In fact, I would even say "Sorry, but I'm a little nervous!" Most of the panel consists of nurses - these are compassionate people for the most part...and the head of the panel is perhaps one of the nicest people I have met at Banner. They want to see you get in - so make it impossible for them to say no.

Let me know if you have any more questions...

Congratulations!!!! It is so nice hearing from people who have made it through nursing school! Do you know what department you are going to work in?

Med Surg ICU. There is no magic pill for being nervous - you just have to let your desire to get in supercede your nerves. Remember - they want to see you get in.

Ambergerz,

When you were called last time and this, was your nursing schoold application still provisional or were you in full status each time? At the info session, they weren't clear on this. I left thinking that they may call those who were still provisional for interviews if they were impressed with their applications. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice Stopnik and goodluck in your career!

MassagetoRN: I believe I was provisional for my first interview. I wasn't aware until I started reading these forums that being in a provisional status works to your disadvantage in the interview. Maybe that is another reason as to why I wasn't accepted into the program the first go around. This time I am completely done with all my pre reqs and I hope that helps me! What information session did you go to that they told you that? Are you applying to the Banner program to or are you already in it?

Amburgerz12,

I just started block 1 with Banner. I was nervous at the interview too. I bet everyone is.

I agree with Stopnick. I think they are looking for total commitment to the excelarated pace and people that are excited about the program.

Arrive early and relax.

Good Luck

azscot

i disagree with the total committment theory...there are quite a few people in my cohort who have more than 3 kids, who work, or have some other huge time committment; i think the more important issues are the ability to illustrate previous experiences that demonstrate all around excellence and the pursuit of quality patient/customer care

how are your classes going azscot?

Ok, so I'm not totally good with directions, does anyone remember how to get to where the interviews are held?

Amburger, You should probably Mapquest the route. To calm your nerves and help you focus, get some lavender oil and inhale the vapors. You can also put it on pulse points

Azscot,How are your classes? What is your schedule like? Are you enjoying yourself?

So I have 3 hours until my interview with Banner and I am confident that I am prepared!!! I'm doing my best to keep my nerves down, which I think will be easier this time around since I know what to expect. Maybe if I just act like I'm talking with a bunch of friends it won't be that hard to do. Wish me good luck!!! I'll let you know how it goes!

Amber,

How did the interview go? What did they ask you? I applied but have heard nothing. Do they send you a letter either way? My mail service isn't all that great. Thanks!
