I'm looking for general info / recommendations for apartments / condos / town home rentals in the local area for BAMC / SAMMC in San Antonio. If you have general guidance it would be appreciated.. will be new to the area.
I'm generally looking for general areas that you'd recommend to look or even specific names of locations. Commute to / from is important.. otherwise I don't mind paying a bit more in order to live in a community that is safe, has trails for exercise, easy access to grocery shopping etc. Any mass transit I should take into consideration? Large good parks in the area? etc.
Please shoot me a private message or reply to general thread. Thanks in advance!

Alamo Heights area is nice.
La Cantera area is great, but a bit of commute.
Families seem to like it up north of city.
San Antonio traffic can be truly awful. I was living near I10 and 410 which I really like, despite traffic. But I on moving downtown when I get back, by then Wilford will be closing and all us AF will be there at SAAMC. I'm looking forward to it and am glad I'm not there for the move now. lol.

The Seaworld area if full of affordable homes. Avoid South and East at all costs. 151 or 90 gets you easy access to 35 and Ft Sam.

BAMC's parking garage is open, finally! So that alone saves you ~15mins of parking on Ft Sam and being shuttled in.
I have friends that live in Converse, Universal City, and Schertz, (far NE side) and they like it. There's a bunch of shopping at "The Forum" which is 1604 and I-35.
But, that I-35 traffic is a killer sometimes- all it takes is one accident and the highway's blocked, traffic is directed onto an access road, and your 15 min commute is an hour.
Now, if you want to get all fancy pants, you could live in Stone Oak. It's outside 1604 on the far far north side. There's a bunch of shopping up there too. Plus, on Blanco and 1604, they have Orange Leaf- a self-serve frozen yogurt place that's pretty much heaven on earth.
Anna, CF250 & mid - thank you for the replies its exactly what I was asking for and hoped to get. If you get an additional ideas / recommendations please post them! Thanks!

Most of the permanent party people here at BOLC have found places in Converse, and love it. Good luck!! I really like San Antonio. :)

What is the estimated cost for the apartments...
Many apartments offer a military discount. I have a one bed, one bath, 755 sq ft apt @ $770/month- I think it usually runs in the 800's. My friend lives by the Quarry (Alamo Heights area) and she found an awesome summer special for a 2bed/1bath for $820/month or something crazy like that... needless to say, she isn't able to get the same rate when her lease ends and is now looking around for another place.
I'm sure you can shop around or find a roomie to save on rent, but remember lower rent ($500-600) usually means a shady neighborhood, or older apartments. I'm spoiled where I am. I moved into a brand new place and didn't have mysterious stains on the carpet, or nightmares about what lurks down the shower drain... ewww.
And remember, a military clause is a must. Make sure you understand what they require for you to use that- like notifying them in writing 60 days prior to moving out.
Good luck on your search! :)
Military clause is a must. I got out of my lease with this deployment and my stuff is in storage. I think of this as a free move. In the medical area, I was paying $945 for a 2 bedroom/2bath apartment with an attached walk up garage. I find that many apartments have washer dryer hookups, but you have to bring your own.
Looking online is difficult. Alot of good places aren't advertised. I had thought I wanted a townhouse and there are some really great ones, but apartment is more my speed right now.
Luna, are you going to be in SA much longer? I don't get back until end Sept.
Sorry, but I roll out of here on the 28th of May! I wish I could have met up with you.

Converse is where I just rented a place. Some live a little further east & they don't find the drive bad. Most people recommend North central to Northeast for housing if working at BAMC. Staying any further can cost you quite a drive because the traffic is unpredictable! Very much so! Don't set your sights on the west or far northwest/southwest end or you will be very frustrated like I am & some others are right now. Houses that are in better areas run in the high 800's to the $1200 range for a good-sized home for a family too. Anything less than that in a house becomes a little scarier in the neighborhoods or location. Apartments here are anywhere from 500-900, depending on how spiffy you want & many of them are EXTREMELY nice! I can hook you up w/ my realtor if you want who focuses on the northcentral/northeastern houses/townhomes if that's the direction you're looking for. I have another contact if it's an apartment you're looking for. Good luck! :)
