Ah man..I was thinking this the other day, I think people should orient on nights. There are less doctors, family members, and you get to learn about your unit better. At least 2 weeks, then go on to days. Usually new night nurses go on days first then nights.
I think if people did nights first, they would get to see the workload dumped by days and hopefully become mindful/courteous when they transition to the day shift.
Im not even a licensed nurse yet, but I would suggest do the night shift first. Its less nerve wracking in my opinion.
So far, I feel like I am sending applications into a dark hole. One facility, the nurse recruiter must be doing quite well, because she is by far, the rudest and snippiest person I have run into yet. Most recruiters are practically kissing your rear (not that they should be...but it's a compliment to their follow-up and willingness to answer questions).
Some folks have just been in their jobs too long.

I agree with you. Nights are so much easier to manage. Family members are either gone or sleeping, the patients are asleep, the docs are asleep and not writing orders every 15 minutes, it's just so much easier to manage the time. There's an equal amount of work, IMO, but it's spread out and not interrupted by all the extra stuff. I like nights so much more than days.

As a new grad I am trying to find my nitch. There is a broad range to choose from in the nursing field. I know one thing that I am unable to nights. Not nocturnal. So where are the jobs for the new grads? Not finding much success. Tried SNF.
