Bad clinical experience

Nursing Students General Students

I just finished my first year in nursing school. I had med-surg clinical, which met every week. The first half was on the gen med-surg and chemo floor. I had a great experience, the nurses were more than helpful with any questions that I had. We then went to the med-surg ortho floor. I had a terrible experience with the nurses (save for one, Thanks Julie!!), they were rude, wouldn't answer questions and basically told us that they didn't want students. I was just wondering if anyone else had an experience like this. I felt like telling those nurses to ease up and that they were once in my shoes.

Yes Ive experienced both types of nurses. Ive only completed my 1st year of NS but the first hospital i was at, most of the nurses were pretty tough to work with. They were very busy, and I often felt like I was a burden. HOWEVER, the last hospital I was at was wonderful! It was a large teaching hospital and I think that made all the difference. ALSO, many of the nurses on the floor I was on were young, semi-new grads and all of them were wonderful to work with (I think because they are still new RNs they can still remember what it was like to be a student nurse) But ya, anyways, ive experienced both types of nurses. Ones that are willing to help, and others that want nothing to do with me. However, its important to understand thats how life is in general. You will encounter many different people with many different personalities... stick in there! I hated my first clinical site, but the second hospital i was at did a total 180 turn.

ive had the same experience...they forget that they were once students......

I have had the same experience. Sometimes they eat there young and forget they were once NS too. You just have to grim and bare it. But sometimes the RN's are so nice it reminds you why you are there.

I have also been in a hospital where the care was horrible. A pt. had a IV in for 2 WEEKS!!!!!! Another pt had phlebitis and it wasn't even in her chart and they were sending her back to the nursing home like that.

its a shame you had such an experience, seeing as that there is a nursing shortage, it is in a hospital's best interest to promote students professional growth. perhaps you should contact the hospital where you had that clincal and let them know your concerns. some people just never seem to get over the "bully mentality" from childhood. good luck, and I hope your future clinicals are better.

while i certainly do not encourage these types of experiences, i can appreciate them when they happen.

i too, also met some rude, abrasive nurses when i was in school.

consider yourself forewarned...

that w/o a doubt, you will encounter and actually work w/these types of nurses after you graduate.

it's a sad reality and a hard one to swallow.

but there you have it.

you are going to be subjected to this type of ignorance for the rest of your working life.

keep your chins up...

and make sure you're a stellar example to nsg students, coworkers and all staff.

when i met my first rude nurse, i promised myself i would never be like that.

you guys have the opportunity to be the new and improved generation of nurses.

now carry on!

Every clinical is a learning experience, sometimes I learned about specific procedures or interventions, some maybe about a med, but a few I learned how NOT to be when I'm on the floor, more often than not I was paired with a nurse that wanted a student and wanted to teach me something b4 my time on the floor was up, but a few were just glad to be rid of me, I didn't take it personally, just took what I could away from the day and learn from it for the future
