does a bad check ruin everything?

'm a 32 year old Marine vet that has been accepted into Chamberlain College of nursing....until the background check revealed a bad check from 5 years ago. I was in between back to back deployments to Iraq and was unaware that I had even bounced a check until today. The school has told me that they are unable to move forward with my registration. I'm obviously freaking out and need a little advice. I plan on taking steps to resolve this issue first thing in the morning, but I'm worried that this one check for probably less than 20 dollars will ruin everything that I've worked for the last two years. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

seriously?! Did they ever issue a bench warrant for the bad check?

no idea, i was in and out of Iraq for most of 2004 through 2006. it is just listed as "Disposition Unserved" on the background check I received. The reporting agency had no further info when I called them. Nothing I can do about it tonight, but am freaking out a little bit that this will prevent me from completing my degree.

Geesh I hope not! I have been accepted into a program for next fall and will have to complete a criminal background check as well and my credit is less than favorable. Although I just did some research into the one I will have to complete and it is done through a company that specialized for health care workers if that makes any difference (idk?). Regardless I don't think that one bounced check will make or break it for you (at least I hope not).

/Edit- I thought the only reason for the background check was to make sure your not a criminal and don't have any serious mental health issues.

I hope so too. What's got me freaking out is that the email I received from the school says "We too have been notified with an Alert on your file. By having an Alert, we are unable to move forward with your acceptance process.". I'll know more tomorrow morning, but the panic fairy is definitely paying a visit to my house right now. I'm just frustrated I have to wait until morning to find out. You might want to do a background check on yourself before your school does so this doesn't happen to you. On the bright side I did ace my urinalysis...lol

Wow, that really sucks! I would totally be freaking out too (sorry, I know I'm not helping the matter). Maybe they will just want an explanation of what happened with the check. Keep us posted on what happens tomorrow! Way to go on the urinalysis, lol :clown:

All that I have to do is pay a lawyer to have the case dismissed. I offered to pay restitution to the company that the bad check was written to. Once that happens the court faxes a document to the background check company that the case was dismissed, they remove the alert and notify the school that I have no alerts posted on my background check and 2 years from now I'll have my BSN. I'm not out of the woods yet but it's good to know that there is a happy ending in sight. Hope this helps anyone with a similar situation. thank you for all of your posts

That's great news! It's too bad they can't just look at it though, you know? I'm kind of worried about the school's critical thinking skills on this one. :lol2: I can't see how this would impact patient safety or care. lol Good luck to you!

I'm glad to hear that it will work itself out but man what a run around huh? Isn't it expensive to hire a lawyer? I agree with the previous poster in the sense that this little blip on your background wouldn't reflect on or impair your nursing skills...just seems silly but happy to hear it will all be good :)

Good to hear it could be solved fairly easily.

As for the background checks, and preventing admission. Typically (and this is the case for Chamberlain, as I am a student there) the background checks are done so that you can do clinicals. If something shows up, and a clinical site would not approve, you will not be admitted to Chamberlain because you would not be able to complete clinicals. The fact that it was an alert, and an unresolved legal matter is probably why they will not give acceptance. Better to find out now, as opposed to when you apply for your License! :)

Thanks, It will all be resolved by early next week. Worst case is that I lose my slot for the Spring semester and have to start in the Summer. It's going to cost around $500 to have it taken care of which sucks but it's worth it to put all of this behind me.
