  1. I was able to take care of the issue, and my background check has been cleared. So hopefully my spot is still available and I'll be able to register for the Spring semester as soon as possible.
  2. I don't think it is going to be a huge problem, but it is going to be expensive. I had to hire a lawyer to have the case dismissed. Once that happens, the alert on my background check will be removed according to the company that did the background check. I would have handled it 5 years ago if I had known about it. My command didn't know about it, and they always find out about bounced checks for some reason, and my bank still can't find any record of a bounced check from my account. Regardless a bad check wouldn't prevent me from obtaining a license, a history of writing bad checks would but that is not something I have. It seems like every school I've looked at has their own unique quirk in their admissions requirements. I think the credit checks are used by schools to verify previous addresses in background checks, although I agree that they shouldn't be used against people trying to better themselves after a rough patch especially in this economy
  3. Thanks, It will all be resolved by early next week. Worst case is that I lose my slot for the Spring semester and have to start in the Summer. It's going to cost around $500 to have it taken care of which sucks but it's worth it to put all of this behind me.
  4. I'm not even sure I actually did bounce a check. My bank never notified me, my command would have definintely gotten involved if they had known. I haven't changed my cell phone number so it's not like I've been trying to hide. I've never had a problem ordering checks or using them. I've opened accounts at other banks with out a problem. The bank the check would have been written from can not find a record of a bounced check at first glance, but is researching it. In 2005 I was literally in and out of Iraq for most of the year so I wasn't keeping as tight a look on my finances as I normally would. It's literally the first and only time anything like this has happened to me. I think the difference between most "small criminals" and myself is that I did not intend to do this and am taking immediate action to rectify the situation. I realize 5 years later is not immediate, but if I can't fix something I don't know about. I understand it's ultimately my responsibility to know about it, but at the time I was busy packing body armor and cammies into a giant green bag. If I wanted all I had to do was pay the lawyer to have the court dismiss it which apparently is quite common. Instead I have offered to pay restitution to the company that bounced the check, which according to my lawyer is not very common and not even required. I'm not a criminal, I just made a mistake that I'm embarassed of.
  5. All that I have to do is pay a lawyer to have the case dismissed. I offered to pay restitution to the company that the bad check was written to. Once that happens the court faxes a document to the background check company that the case was dismissed, they remove the alert and notify the school that I have no alerts posted on my background check and 2 years from now I'll have my BSN. I'm not out of the woods yet but it's good to know that there is a happy ending in sight. Hope this helps anyone with a similar situation

  7. and thank you for all of your posts
  8. Still haven't been able to talk to the school, but it seems that this will be a relatively easy/expensive fix. The company that did the background check told me that I received an alert because of the unserved warrant for a simple bad check. I have to hire a lawyer in North Carolina to handle it and once the matter is resolved the alert will be removed. After an hour of searching my estatements from the bank I had at the time I couldn't find a record of the check that "allegedly" lol bounced. The case number that was provided to me on my report is for someone else, but that doesn't mean I haven't bounced a check. I'm embarrassed that this is on my record, but the outlook doesn't seem as bad as it did last night. Thank you for all of your advice. I'll be doing a background check on myself first from now on before any future school or employer does one.
  9. Thank you, and yes I'm aware that I broke the law, I'm not disputing that. I'm going to pay my debt (fine) to society first thing in the morning for writing a bad 10 to 15 dollar check for food. I would have done it five years ago if I had known. I'm just trying to get advice from anyone that has gone through or knows someone that has gone through a similar situation. It is the Chamberlain in St. Louis. I've heard both good and bad things, but feel that the amount of effort I put in will determine my success or failure no matter where I go. Although I have to admit that there is no waiting list was significant. Thank you very much for your advice and allowing me to vent a little. I'll tackle this issue in the morning.
  10. Thanks I will
  11. thank you for all your posts. I just found out about it this afternoon and because everyone (except nurses and Marines) stop working at 5pm. I have to wait until the morning to investigate it further. I'm going to resolve the bad check first thing tomorrow, but I don't know what will happen after that. The email the school sent me said "We too have been notified with an Alert on your file. By having an Alert, we are unable to move forward with your acceptance process." Which could either mean they can't finish enrolling me until I've taken care of it.....or I'm done. The only things I ever wrote checks for while I was in the Marine Corps was pizza and chinese food. I'm going to freak the f out if an order of General Tso's chicken keeps me out of nursing school.
  12. I hope so too. What's got me freaking out is that the email I received from the school says "We too have been notified with an Alert on your file. By having an Alert, we are unable to move forward with your acceptance process.". I'll know more tomorrow morning, but the panic fairy is definitely paying a visit to my house right now. I'm just frustrated I have to wait until morning to find out. You might want to do a background check on yourself before your school does so this doesn't happen to you. On the bright side I did ace my urinalysis...lol
  13. no idea, i was in and out of Iraq for most of 2004 through 2006. it is just listed as "Disposition Unserved" on the background check I received. The reporting agency had no further info when I called them. Nothing I can do about it tonight, but am freaking out a little bit that this will prevent me from completing my degree.
  14. i hope so, i just found out about it today when i received the results of my background check this afternoon. i'll be making more phone calls in the morning but have been in panic mode and was curious if anyone had been through anything similar.
  15. 'm a 32 year old Marine vet that has been accepted into Chamberlain College of nursing....until the background check revealed a bad check from 5 years ago. I was in between back to back deployments to Iraq and was unaware that I had even bounced a check until today. The school has told me that they are unable to move forward with my registration. I'm obviously freaking out and need a little advice. I plan on taking steps to resolve this issue first thing in the morning, but I'm worried that this one check for probably less than 20 dollars will ruin everything that I've worked for the last two years. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
