Thanks.
They are looking for ANY criminal convictions, or reports of abuse! Also some will look at incidents of injuries in the past, by checking medical records. They also check school transcripts, and even credit reports. There was a person, who was acting as the head of a community college here, who had NO DEGREE! So really they're checking to see if you're really who you say you are.
Everywhere I go on assignment, I have to repeatedly have a background check!

we had a nurse who had her license suspended twice. once in our state once in another for taking pt. meds and was reinstated. no criminal action was taken. while working night shift she o.d.'d on pts morphine. this was in home care and the family had to do cpr till ambulance came. turns out she was watering the liquid down and had also taken some anti-siezure meds. since no criminal action was taken, she had no record. all the state tells new facilities is if the license is in current, no disipinary action. she did not use the previous employers as references. soooooo ....... by the way the employer has to tell you what you are being checked for, and a lot of places check your credit, like dept stores and banks.
I work outside of the nursing field and I agree that credit checks are a privacy issue. I am now in the insurance field and we use credit as a factor in the rates we give which totally confounds me because like most people my credit history is due largely to an ex. Look at it from an administrative point however. Bad credit can mean that a person has no respect for themselves. Bad credit can cause extreme measures. How much can someone get on the street for some of the drugs used by patients? Just a thought.
I also feel that credit checks are an invasion of privacy, but I do know of an Travel agency, that included a credit check in lengthy worded statement at the bottom of the app. This was a blanket statement, that would allow them to even talk to ANYONE, who had knowledge about you. I also have had my credit checked by other companies, that I was interested in working for.
