I got accepted into the Fall 2006 MRC/AU BN program. I was 35 when I applied and had a 3.8 in a U.S. Associates in Bus Admin degree. I got a conditional acceptance, and had to take Chem 30 in order to be accepted. I did that and was accepted.. now I'll be done in December 09. I'm so happy I went for it! I'm about to lose my mind to finish my last pre-reqs in order to start my final practicum in the Fall... but nothing will stop me now hehe. It's a great program btw. :)

I would suggest not taking the A&P classes unless you can do really well in them. You wouldn't want them to knock your GPA down before you get accepted. Most of the nursing students say A&P was their lowest graded course. But if you love the sciences and put in the time.. you can do it. :)

is it really that difficult to get into Mount Royal? what about U of C? I am looking to begin in Fall of 2011 and had 70s in my core classes in high school. I will however have two degrees as of this may,

Nursing programmes are extremely competitive to get into in Alberta. Over the years we have seen over 1100 applicants for 120 spaces. 70s in high school may meet the published results in the school catalogue but reality sees marks in the high 80s being the acceptance point. Unless one of your degrees is in Science???

To be accepted into Mount Royal University it sounds like you could probably go the post secondary route:

"Fall Semester: You will be considered as a post-secondary applicant if you have completed four post-secondary courses (minimum 12 credit hours) by Dec. 31 and will have completed eight post-secondary courses (minimum 24 credit hours) by June 30."

They have to be transferable courses but they can be from any focus. So going this route they actually look at your university GPA (of the last four courses) and they only make sure you have these marks from high school (or high school upgrading) courses:

  • English Language Arts 30-1-60%
  • Mathematics 30 (Pure)- 50%
  • Biology 30- 50%
  • One of: Chemistry 30, Physics 30 or Science 30- 50%

I'm not exactly sure what your GPA would need to be but aim high :) It is competitive although Mount Royal added a lot more seats last year so they now take in around 400 students into the Bachelor of Nursing program each fall.

Hey, I am currently looking into applying for the nursing program for fall intake 2011, I have been out of highschool since 2005 but have upgraded a few courses to pull my average up. I however havent upgraded my math mark which is 62. My average however is about an 80. Do you think I should be worried with only an 80 because I have been out of highschool for about 5 years and I have no post-secondary??? Also I was also wondering how many people they actually accept and when is the earliest I can apply? Anything will help!! Thanks.

If any of you are interested in southern Alberta, I know the program at UofL is not as competitive as MRC or UofC. I started out there for my first year and my high school grades were not that great. They used my college courses in lieu of my high school grades for admissions. I don't believe they factor in your GPA. They have requirements for English 30, Math 30, Bio 30, Chem 30, and an elective. If you don't have good grades in the above courses they will use college courses such as A&P, English, etc for your admission average..They try really hard to get students in; however that was back in 2007 so not sure if it is the same.
