I'm in the same boat as you.
I got a BS in biology then I went for ADN at a private school that also had a "step" program for BSN (you finish up your ADN and work while getting your BSN). The cost for the BSN was too much so I am doing RN-BSN at a state college. Whether or not your BS in biology matters is entirely up to the hospital and/or nurse manager. It's "helped" me more often than not, but experience is paramount (e.g., CNA, EMT, volunteering kind-of). For sure, apply for jobs especially because [given the economy] you aren't even sure you will get a job immediately. Plus, more schooling at this point does not equate to better job prospects and most RN-BSN/MSN programs are flexible enough to allow you to work while going to school. (Obviously workload depends on you. My workmate is taking 5 classes for her BSN while working two jobs. I could only do one class with my one job.)
Thanks so much for the other outlook. I'm currently in a tough program and I work two jobs (one night shift and one day shift, over full time). I figured I would still apply and it would help and I would let them know I do plan on bridging to a Masters program.
I've been a CNA for 7 years and I'm currently working as a Critical Care Tech in the step down unit for UCI which has been attractive even enough for Yale to want to hire me. Just nervous about the whole nursing portion.
But seriously, thank you so much, I feel a bit better now knowing I'm not alone lol
Oddly enough - my BS in Biology is from UCI! Woot!
