I'm new to travel nursing, I have a little over a year of experience on a 5 surgical specialty floor. I'm trying to go to NYC, and there aren't a lot of permanent job openings right now, so I've looked into travel nursing. I've been talking to Aya Healthcare, and they seem to be, or my recruiter seems to be, okay. I've only been talking to them for about a week and my recruiter keeps in touch very well, and he moves fast. We've talked by email or phone daily while we've been setting me up to be submitted for a position. The offer for a contract he gave me is the following;
-$500 travel reimbursement
-Private furnished housing (equivalent to $3,000/mo, which if it's cheaper I'll get the difference added to my hourly)
-$100/mo utilities
-Health insurance
-License reimbursement
-$25/hr
The hourly seemed REALLY low to me at first, but then I found out I'll get $3000/mo. for a furnished apartment. To me this seems like a great deal, when I sat and did the math and research, even down to how much a monthly metro card costs in NYC.
Any opinions? Since I'm new to this I don't want to get screwed over, but this seems like a great way to at least get myself to NYC, get some more experience, and work at a great hospital (Memorial Sloan Kettering).
Let me know what you think...

Hi BD-RN,
I am new to travel nursing and am working with Aya Healthcare recruiter. Since their offer seems low (my offer is low too, according to one of my travel nursing friends), you might try checking with another travel agency or any travel nursing buddies that you know. I hope this helps you out. Good luck!!!

That puts y in at 46.00 an hour which is pretty good, just be careful-that 3000.00 a month can get eaten up fast in NYC. Housing is really expensive!

How did travel nursing go since you only had 1 year of experience? I am looking at doing travel nursing and besides LTC I only have a year of m/s experience.

I'm also curious about your experience. I have 2 years of per diem experience in LTC and M/S, working full time between the two.
Hi everyone,
I actually decided against travel nursing at the time to gain more experience. I also got offered a perm position in NYC so I took that instead. Now that I have 2.5 yrs experience I'm doing travel nursing, starting in so cal.
Also, that is a pretty good contract for NYC, I found out. As far as 3K, it can et eaten up quick, but if you're not looking for a luxury apt, you can get a decent sublet, or just take the corporate housing. Sorry I never replied!
