Awesome new development at our corrections facility

Specialties Correctional

Partially due to the Florida case where the prison nurses won lawsuits over the COs turning their heads to the inmates jerking off, our facility implemented some changes in the past week or so.

If they are blatantly trying to show off their goods or how it works, we can file street charges against said inmate. The end result of this is that not only does the inmate have extra in-house charges against him (earning more time behind bars), but he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his LIFE.

This was exlained to all of the inmates so that they understand the ramifications in no uncertain terms, but a couple of them have tried to challenge it to see if we're serious. One I/M pulled his "thing" out while I was changing his bandaging (right leg torn up by K9, lol). The CO made note of it, we have it on surveillance, so BAM: 20 years old and he's now a sex offender for the next 40 yrs. Good luck finding a place to rent, buddy.

Has any of your jails/prisons implemented such measures? Thanks...

Buckybadger- you mentioned not degrading prison patients, my intent was to add- why do so many nurses degrade ALL kinds of patients? As for my law idea, it's 'tongue in cheek'. Meaning: If you really can't stand the patients you deal with, then GET A NEW JOB.

And, I totally agree.

Nursing is not for everyone. My mother told me from the beginning of my career that when/if I lost compassion and/or found myself hating my job ... burned out.... etc., take a break or change positions.

These words still ring true today.

Nursing is hard and if you need a change, there's nothing wrong with that. Just research, weigh pro/cons, etc.

Also, just want to clarify my statement above ... NO patient in ANY setting should be degraded. We are important providers for their healthcare and are desperately needed in all areas of nursing.

I think your new law was "tongue in cheek", yes. But, you are correct, if you cannot "stand" the patients you deal with, get a new job.

Well, they are all patients. We recognize our inmates as patients, and people, and humans. We are courteous and polite. Remember, they each have their story and they may even be unjustly accused. I'm not saying become their friend or give them a hug, just treat them with some sort of decency.

But, on the other topic, an old hairy man exposed himself to me a while back. If this had happened outside of the jail, he would have been arrested. But in jail, it's handled like "oh well, that's what dirty old men do.".

It's NOT OK!!!

Wow. The lack of empathy for fellow nurses is astounding. I for one feel this is NOT a victimless crime because no nurse should have to put up with inmates exposing themselves on purpose day in and day out while she is trying to do her job. Walking out only makes her job more difficult to perform. She's trying to hand out meds. I'm sure she doesn't have all day to wait around for the pervert to get bored and put his private parts away. For crying out loud! Get off your high horse and show a little compassion for your colleague. Shame on you!
