Australian nurse wanting to work in America

Hello! I am an Aussie RN from Melbourne Australia. I am very interested in working as a nurse in America due to family reasons. Especially interested in Tennessee, Texas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Colorado or Arizona. I have completed a 3 year bachelor course in Australia and am concerned that I may not have the required obstetrics and pediatric hours required. Is there a course I complete in Melbourne or even in the USA to make up these hours? I would love to know where to begin the process of moving to the USA. i would like to add that i was an IV drug endorsed enrolled nurse for 5 years prior to an RN in case that helps. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Which state are you applying?Apparently Ahpra don't fill up forms of any kind. You can still contact cgfns on their contact us form and they are very responsive.

What specifically form that you would like Ahpra to fill up?If this is for lucense validation what you just need to do is go to Ahphra website and request for (CoRS)CERT OF REGISTRATION STATUS..that would suffice. You can attach that through contact us form or to be very sure attach it as well to your profile in the license validation.

Hope that helps.?

One more when you request for CoRS you need to send it directly  to CGFNS ...their is an option on which regulatory you will send to and you will click CGFNS..

Hi @RN.Kelsey

AHPRA will not fill in the form from CGFNS. AHPRA has their own form, which you can request from their website. From memory it does have a small fee that you'll have to pay. I cannot remember the name of the form but I was directed on how to access that form via phone through APHRA. Once you pay, APHRA will fill the form and send it directly to CGFNS. Mine was accepted by both CGFNS and the NY board with no problem.
hope this helps

Hi All,

All the information on this thread so far has been super helpful. I was wondering if any of you Aussies have used nursing agencies to get a job over in the US? (E.g. O'Grady Peyton or Avant)? I'm interested specifically in Tennessee or surrounds, but it's all very overwhelming with the information. Has anyone successfully gotten licensing in TN or surrounds?

Hi,

Has anyone been able to endorse their license to Florida or Georgia? I'm an Australian Graduated nurse currently licensed with NY and wanting to apply to apply to the above states.

Does anyone know if CES report is required?

If you check the states Board of Registered Nursing website, it will clearly state what is required for nurses who did their training internationally who are seeking registration / licensing in that particular state.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for this information. I was just approved for the NCLEX through NY. However, I'm not sure what my evaluation resulted in because I simply received an email stating that I was approved to apply to take the NCLEX through PersonVue. Was it the same with you? Did you get a full evaluation report? Your response would be highly appreciated.

If you have been approved to take the NCLEX and have an ATT (authorization to test, or something similarly worded)They have accepted your application.

Once you pass the test you will be a recognized RN in the state of NY.

Thank you for your speedy response, Daniel. I have not applied for the ATT yet. I'd like to see how I do with my preparation before applying. I just signed up with nursing.com today to start studying for the NCLEX. You indicated in your previous post that you are in Texas, if I recall correctly. Did Texas request your transcripts before approving you as an RN? I'm contemplating Texas as well because I have family in Dallas.

Do you see any similarities between Australian nursing practice and that of the United States? Did you settled in confortably with your Australian experience? Do American registered nurses make more than Australians? I will be looking for work in either Syracuse or Rochester. Do you know anything about those cities outside of New York City?

NCLEX is a lot harder than you think; study up.

I used Archer review and it helped a lot.

Texas requested my transcripts only when I asked for my license (which was already active) to be converted to a compact license.

Nursing here encourages more independence than back in Australia. You are going to be gathering and acting on data about your patients more actively than I did in Australia. Drs will expect more autonomy and responsibility on your part. Communication between Dr's and Nurses is overall poorer in my experience also. Though this could just be the hospitals I have worked at.

I never set foot in NY after I obtained my license so I wouldnt know ?.

Texas is alright but Austin is cooler than Dallas ?
