Austin Community College - ACC - Spring '12 Hopefuls

I am just finishing up level 1 hybrid and it is excellent!! I would not recommend it to anyone who really needs guidance to learn though. You really need to be disciplined as far as studying. For our schedule this past semester I was able to stay at my job on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. You are totally devoted to either labs on campus at Round Rock or clinicals at either Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, North Austin Medical Center, or Texas Neuro Rehab. They were really flexible with us about switching clinical sites to get us close to where we lived as long as we had someone to switch with. I don't think every level will do that. I was stuck at Texas Neuro and I live in Round Rock so I was lucky to find someone to switch with and I got NAMC. Every other week we had a test on Tuesdays. The tests are all multiple choice on computers.

I can only personally speak for hybrid but our instructors are all great! The clinical sites are all very different so if ya'll want details of which ones to shoot for I can give you guys details. Just let me know and I will post it.

I have heard great things about hybrid, but I like "class" class!! I like teachers saying "really focus on this" and being able to ask questions if i need clarification. Plus, to me, class is kinda like a forced study time and MAKES me get out of my pj's!! I've heard some good things about CEC also (they are the only ACC students allowed in the medical library there at brack and that library is open 24 hrs!!! I'm all about 24 hr libraries!!! I used to pull all nighters at the libraries at UT with study groups.)

so RADIATIONRN2BE, how does the hybrid actually work?? Do they give you a list of things to study? How do you know what to focus on for each test?? You have lab, but as far as the lecture, how is the information of what to focus on given to you?? Are there open lecture times or tutoring times?? I'm taking human nutrition online this summer to get a taste of the online self paced thing, so i can make a better decision.

Hybrid is actually very structured. We have the same strict deadlines and and assigned readings that the students on campus do. Actually we do have lecture seminars but they are done from the comfort of your computer. For every module we had a lecture seminar we could either participate in live time or watch it later whenever we had the chance. The online seminars are in a chat room format with the instructor going through the assigned powerpoints while we were free to type questions whenever we wanted. So I never felt "on my own" in hybrid because those chat room sessions were twice a week. We just didn't have to drive up to campus to attend them.

At the beginning of the semester we were given a calendar which had all the test dates and information being covered for that week. So like on Mondays it would list exactly which modules we needed to focus on for that particular week and the dates and times of the seminars. We were given a test blueprint for the whole semester which told us exactly how much material would be on each exam.

I'm just starting Anatomy this summer, then on to the rest this fall...anybody know the average wait for acceptance into the program (1-2 semesters?). I was hoping the program would be expanded since the opening of the RR campus.

As far as the wait, it depends on many factors such as co-reqs, GPA, and HESI score. When I attended a nursing information session we were told that the cutoff score for the past few semesters were 52-53. So in order to obtain that score with the "least" amount of waiting then all your co-reqs should be completed with a good GPA (3.6 or higher) and have a score of 10 on the HESI. For example, if the above was completed and an applicant turned in their application during the next application period for the traditional track (June 1st-August 22nd) then that applicant will be accepted for Spring 2012 (if the cutoff scores remain the same and if that applicant passes their background check). So to answer your question, if an applicant was accepted the first time around then it would be a 6 month wait.

The first time my ranking was 50.27 and I made it into nursing skills but did not make the final cut. This time I have a 61.03 so I am very hopeful that this will be my time. All the information that you got from information session is true in my personal experience. Last semester the admissions offfice told me that 52-53 is usual cutoff except that I think they is more that 15 reapplicants.

The only thing that I cannot get over is they let these people in and then they drop out after first 6 wks, just like you had said Radiation. I cannot believe people wait this long to get in and then drop out as soon as they are accepted. To me, it seems that in the first few weeks the nursing school could call people further down the list and ask them if they were let in could they catch up? I would have totally done that.

You'll get in no problem! It is a shame that we lost so many people this past semester. I think the top reasons would be 1) they just could not understand the unique test questions. Nursing exams are not about memorizing like a lot of our pre-reqs were, 2) it was their first experience in any clinical setting and some were just shocked at what they saw nurse's being responsible for and they got intimidated, 3) they weren't at all prepared for the amount of paperwork and extra time needed to succeed.

Allnurses.com and my many friends I have in the program helped me prepare and make it through this past first semester with an "A" so I figure this is the least I can do to help the others on here getting ready to start.

I just have a general question...... So far I have A's for all my coreqs...... 2 C's for Micro and Anatomy and 1 A for Math (prereqs) It say that I need a 2.7 and C or better for my prereqs.... How is that possible? I am so confused and worried at the same time. Lets say I have 4 C's and 1 A will that do? Not that I am trying to do that. I have Pharm and Phys let to do and hope to do better. Any information anyone can give me I would really welcome.

According to the information session the "minimum" to apply for the ADN program is completing the 5 pre-reqs and they accept grades of C or better AND a GPA of 2.7. So if an applicant just had the 5 pre-reqs with C's then that applicant would not qualify since their GPA is lower than a 2.7. Another example would be an applicant who completed all 5 pre-reqs where the applicant has 4 A's and 1 F. Although they completed all 5 pre-reqs and has a GPA of 3.2 (above the 2.7 GPA requirement) they would still not qualify for the program since the grades] of one of their pre-reqs is an F.
