Hi everyone,

Would love to have some advice about the possibilty of working as an rn in alberta. I'm planning on travelling to canada in 2010 in may-june for the start of summer for 12 months and am trying to figure out whether it's worth going through the regisration process to work as an RN. My current experience is 2 1/2 years since I gradauted. Have had experience in ed,renal, gen med, resp, cardiac, ortho but no exp as such in paed and obstetrics both of which I have no interest in working whilst in canada. I would like to know what u guys think in terms of whether i'l need to do any further work/study to satisfy alberta selection process or will I just need to sit the CRNE exam and pass it. This registering process is very different to what I'm used to so excuse my ignorance with some of the fine points.

Those of us working here don't know if we'll have jobs next year, thanks to the Australian known as Duckit, who is slashing our system to the bone.

The registration process for Alberta is the same as the rest of the provinces as the CRNE is a national exam.

If you are eligible to take the exam and you pass it then you can usually work in any province but you do have to go through a separate registration process for each province. There is no national registration it is provincial.

Getting a job in Alberta may be a bit tricky as there are some political things going on there now but BC and other provinces have lots of jobs.

Hi Mick,

I am an australian registered nursing living in Ontario. I recently applied to the provincial board here to write the exam and was refused. Apparently many of the Australian nursing programs don't have enough clinical hours to qualify to write the exam. Unless you have worked as a RN for many years (10+) your work experience will have little bearing on their decision because its not classified as proof of "consolidated learning" as it would be if you completed university based clinical hours. This is what I have been told from the CNO here. So, I'm off to do graduate studies with clinical practicums before I can register here. You'll find it an extremely frustrating process but you never know, you might get lucky in Alberta!

Getting a job in Alberta may be a bit tricky as there are some political things going on there now but BC and other provinces have lots of jobs.

There have been many cuts announced to health care in BC in recent weeks. The ministry is hoping to reduce the budget by $360 million dollars, which means nursing jobs will be on the chopping block either through outright layoffs or through "restructuring" so that LPNs will be taking on a larger role in health care provision. It's a tough time to be an RN looking for work in many areas of Canada right now.

Good luck trying to find a job in Alberta.

I have worked with both the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University with nursing students and not many of them have been able to find a job. Most of the jobs posted are for internal applicants only. THe majority of the nursing graduates have left the province and or the country.

...and yet, the latest issue of the canadian nurse magazine features in its entire back cover a full colour ad of alberta health services advertising nursing in alberta....only to search for job postings and find at the end of them this odious little message:

this posting is open to qualified ahs employees only.

and yes, they use red coloured font.

why doesnt alberta want my nursing services???
