We are thinking of getting an Au pair for our 4 children.....but I believe that is a federal rule for the 10 hours. Its been on every site i have looked on. I'm married so it's not a huge deal for us. We only need someone about 20 hours a week but my friend paid 18 thousand for part-time child care last year for 2 kids...... so i figure why not have full time lined up for the same price.
My husband and I looked into getting an Au Pair before we decided he would be a SAHD. I know some people who do need more than 10 hours a day of child care occasionally, and they usually schedule their Au Pair for ten hours and then have a sitter, friend, or family member come over the remaining time needed. Though that isn't too often, and if you're doing 12 hour shifts say 3 days a week then those extra hours will add up quickly for a sitter.
I can't think of a way around it for at night, but during summer maybe a day camp for a few hours would help?
Good luck!

Wondering if anyone uses an au pair for child care with working full time? I am a shift rotater, and every agency I have looked at requires an au pair work no more than 10 hours per day, even though I explained I still only work 36 hours a week (plus travel time).
This is not a problem if I work day shift and my kids are in school; but during summer or night shifts is a problem.
Other than this, I think an au pair is a good route to go, as I'm a single parent. With 2 school aged kids, and local baby sitters want somewhere between 17-25$ a hour; not a good option for me; as that would be pretty much my entire paycheck :-/
SO...my questions are:
1. What agency do you use?
2. Have you had any issues with this agency?
3. Pros/cons from your personal experience.
