Hello all,

I have been wanting to apply to nursing school forever (well.....really since 2006 when I left my first school). I began my college education at the most expensive school in NYC. Anyways I left after some time due to $$$$/family issues and then transferred to a SUNY. While I was there I became very sick to the point I was making three-five trips a day to the ER and was unable to work. I left my SUNY in order to become closer to a free place live and get better. I am now all healthy and set to attend a 4-yr CUNY in the fall as a History major.

When I attended the SUNY:

AP I: B

AP II: C

Gen Chem:B-

Orgo/Biochem:C

Stats: C+

Gen Bio II: B

Micro: B+

and a C and A in both Psychs. I know the grades are not great but I was as close to death's doors as I think I will be unless I really pass this life (believe it or not.....I still did better than a lot of the nursing students in the SUNY school). I am better now and plan to take over the AP's again and Orgo/Chem.

My cum GPA is a 3.0 and if I get better grades in those 3 science I think that will help in the whole admin process.

I just wanted to know if you think I have a chance I getting in. I even have professors from my second school willing to give my recommendations and explain my withdrawals/and less than stellar average

I know it says the whole 2.75 thing does that mean I can automatically get in or that is just their minimum requirement and that they usually pick those with a 3.5+?

I was planning on graduating and then go onto a second degree program but I am an independent student. For those who don't know sometimes being independent sometimes means getting the s***t-end of the financial aid stick and on top of that I am way below the poverty line and have no dependents (Thank God). So I was thinking I should just get my BSN during this first round while I still qualify for Pell, SEOG,and anything else and since I am still under 30. If I get in I will still have 3 yrs left in my 20s to have fun after graduation.

Anyways I just wanted to ask the questions:

1) For those who transferred to LIU: what was your GPA when you did transfer ( in particular your science grades)? and what was the finaid they gave you?

2) For transfer students w/o a previous bachelors or associate degree: did you have to complete all those extra courses like philosophy and extra English ( I took two already from my 1st school)---I am setting up my schedule at CUNY in a way that would beneficial to me if I do get into LIU

2) Is it possible to get scholarships as a Continuing student? e.g. get a 3.5+ or above your first semester and then you get a little gift from the FinAID office

3) I read a lost of horror stories on here already about 50%+ failure rates. Is is really that bad? or is that just because one does not study enough?

4) I read somewhere on here that PDAs come with the program is that true? (not really important but just wanted to know)

5) How was then entrance HESI?

6) If I get into the Fall 2010 cohort (my goal) am I guaranteed my spot? eg. I have read they accept like 100+ a semester.... is there enough room for everyone or do some get moved to later semesters? (I hope to avoid so I am going to apply for Fall 2010 after I get my better grades -- going by faith the size of a mustard seed-- at the end of the Fall 2009 semester. Getting A's which is feasible -just relearning old material- will raise my science GPA to a 3.18 (and that is with an C from APII which I plan to take over in the Spring 2010 semester).

7) I would just like your take on the school and how the workload is, the $$$ spent on books ( just for future reference)

8) Extra question: I dream on becoming a NNP or a PNP who specializes in Oncology. I know that those areas might not necessarily be in clinicals but I know at some schools a student can take an independent course and study a particular field of practice. Is that possible @ LIU?

I am so psyched to go back to school. LIU is like the only school ( in this area) that does not average prerequisites if repeated(according to the lady I talked in the Nursing dept) and does not have nosebleed $$$$$ so this is not only my first choice but my last hope. I am finally healthy after being ill for 2.5 yrs and I am ready to roll out the 4.0.

Thank you for reading and responding.

God Bless,

Nursing is growing in popularity, it's one of the fastest growing majors people are taking on so my guess is yeah, there will be a waiting list. Not anything insane like 2 years but mostly one semester. Which is nothing compared to waiting lists at CUNY. I changed my major too late and ended up having to wait one semester to get in.

but one of liu's representative told me that there no waiting list but i guess one semester isn'y bad at all like you said.

ha! they will tell you that of course because they want your money. I was wait listed one semester because they had no more spots.

ya i know that what i told one of my friend about the cuny schools. she asked the chair person she told her that they dont have a waiting list. anyways thank you a lot of your help wish you the best of luck. keep me up to date when you get accepted.

She is right though. Although there is not a wait-list persay at LIU..if there is not enough room for Fall clinicals you will be pushed to the Spring semester. I think that might happen to me. I am still completing prereqs over the summer and I hope that there will be room for the Fall but if there is not I will start in the spring

What I've realized is that a lot of people in LIU wait until the last minute to do something. People are waiting too long to take the entrance HESI exam and even though you can take it twice, they can't be in the same semester. So for example if you start Fall 2010, you should take the entrance exam in Fall 2009 just in case you fail the first time. A lot of people waited until Spring 2010, but if you don't pass, you can't take it again until Fall 2010 and therefore you're pushed back a semester. I took the HESI entrance and it wasn't too difficult for me but a lot of people found it challenging. It's four parts and you have to pass each part, if you fail even one you have to retake the entire exam. If you don't pass the second time however, that's it and you can't try applying for the school again. I have a lot of friends who claim they are starting in the fall but haven't even taken the entrance exam yet and the semester ends in two days! I don't know what they are waiting for.

Not only that but I think the school is dealing with an influx of students now. Right now we already have 90 students registered to start the professionaly phase in the Fall semester and that isn't including people who didn't register for classes yet (for some odd reason registration opened over a month ago!), people waiting for Hesi results, people transferring in and people finishing up classes in the Summer. A lot of my friends came from CUNY schools because of the ridiculous wait list, a lot of people are switching majors within the school (Usually from Pharmacy) so there are usually over 100 nursing students every semeter.

They're really trying to raise their standards for the nursing students they accept.

Hi guiltysins,

Congrats on passing the exam! :) I have read all the comments about entrance exam and prospect students for the up coming fall 2010. I have applied at LIU and I need your advice. I am a bit concern about getting in for fall 2010. I have given my official transcript with a degree of liberal arts and as of now, I am finishing my last 2 chemistry that is required for nursing. The admission office is waiting for my mid-year report to evaluate my chemistry. In able for me to take the entrance exam, I have to be accepted first. Since I have read all the comment about getting in for fall of 2010, my big concern is that once i got accepted and have passed the entrance exam, will I have a guarantee seat for this up coming fall 2010?

Also, any few points on the exam? Vocabulary-should I reveiw from SAT book or is it medical terms?

Thanks for you help :)

If you get accepted and pass the HESI then from what I know you are guaranteed a seat for Fall 2010. There are still a lot of opening in the nursing courses because people are not passing the HESI exam or they are choosing to go to another program. A few people applied to NYU because they don't have an entrance exam. There are at least 10 people I know who are registered to take their HESI next week so some people have really taken their time. A number of students are being accepted for the part-time program due to low HESI scores so that's why some classes are filling up more than others.

As far as the exam. Vocab wasn't as bad as I expected. There is some medical terms but nothing major. Simple things like overt, concave, tachycardia and things like that. Some things you'll recognize from A&P. The Grammar and Reading Comp was SAT style. What is the main idea, what is the author trying to say, what is the grammatical error in this sentence, ect. Good luck! I'm starting in the fall, hopefully you'll be there with me.

i got dismissed from liu nursing program this program as well as lots of my EXTREAMLY SMART friends, we all changed our majors n graduated. liu nursing school is prejudice, has their favorites, very unorganized and passes people who they want to pass only, only want to get your money and then give you the boot. do not go there. try a cuny or suny school instead!

Sorry, I beg to differ. Those of us who graduated, did not get by just because we were liked and professors passed us only because they wanted to pass us. They passed us because we earned passing grades. If you pass all your exams, no one is going to fail you, that's ludicrous. People earn the grades they do. If people got kicked out (I don't believe it's because they didn't work hard, liu is a tough program sometimes your best isn't good enough) they got kicked out because they didn't make the cut. Some failed by a point, some less than a point so I do sympathize with them but don't go making it seem like just because you were dismissed the school is no good and everybody else is the one with the problem.
