I am a second courser who is taking up nursing, as my second course and I am wondering if there is an attitude problem with regards to second coursers taking up nursing(not all, but most of them). Given in my school, most of the second coursers there tend to be manipulative, sneaky, backfight, and spread rumors, as if they dont have nothing to do. I am wondering if this is quite normal as when I studied my first course, people were kind of tame and quiet, and be friendly.
Given the fact that these people aspire to be future nurses, they dont have the tender loving care to take care of their patients in the long run, and they just think of money, so I am wondering how this people can go about to being future nurses then?
I hope anyone can share their insights on this matter. I would like actually to do a research for this for my nursing research class, unfortunately I did a different topic. Though I want to know the opinions of other second coursers then..

Not all second courser are like that. I'm not a second courser but I had former classmates who are a second courser. MAybe it really depends on the person. We can't judge all the second courser because of few rotten eggs.
Maybe they tend to think that they are older that's why they act like that. One thing is for sure, these are not the attitude of a good nurse. If money is the only reason why they took nursing, trust me, they'll quit in no time! Nursing is not that easy!!!!

Hi Bingowingo. I am a second courser graduated from San Beda College BSC Marketing Management and now a graduating nursing student of PRI. In my case i dont see second coursers that way in our school. In fact most of our clinical instructors are even telling us that they opt to teach 2nd coursers instead of the fresh ones. Most of the 2nd coursers in our school are excelling and they stand out. We always lead the way for our younger classmates and we help each other in group works etc. You see in our school, 2nd coursers have good camaraderie and good reputation. Some of us are even CPAs, Dentist, PTs etc. but we dont take that as something for us to brag about. We level ourselves with our younger classmates since all of us are back to square one and are all learning the tender loving care that filipino nurses should learn and ofcourse the skills as well. As a 2nd courser we should be a role model to our younger generation. Infact one of the 2nd courser in our school is so good in making movies with the use of his Cellphone you can even watch it on youtube. If you're not familiar with it you can search for "The Ward" or Chukkoi. To tell you honestly, most of the 2nd coursers in our school are the best students our school has to offer. Good day and God Bless all Filipino nurses!

Actually not all second coursers are that bad or have an attitude problem though there are some exceptional people who thinks so high of themselves. They think they are more superior than others and even think that they're better than their classmates and teacher because they're older and have more experience... As if.... hehehe
is PRI Philippine Rehab Institute? Had a friend who studied there but have lost contact with him...
I think that our school is also one of the main factors why the attitude of second coursers are like that. But I think there are a lot of personality problems/attitudes that need to be corrected in our way of learning within the school. Most of my groupmates now are second coursers, I dont see the need lang why they need to please our clinical instructors with gifts, etc etc etc, and yet if you dont join them, they would have a fit with you.
There are a lot of attitude problems within my school, that most times you would find it irritating that most of your groupmates, who are professionals in their own field, would be the one spreading rumors behind your back, backbiters, et al. I have a short fuse as well so sometimes even though they think they are far superior to other students, I stand up for what is right...as we are all going to that same school and paying the same tuition as the others..

Hello, I'm also a 2nd courser. I have encountered 2nd coursers also who are psyche cases...but I choose to be in the company of the normal ones. Some brag about what they have accomplished, others are too arrogant and thinks that they are better than our young professors. It's all part of the system I guess. Just be with the company of the "normal" and treat these wackos as psyche patients...I learned alot by studying their attitudes. You will appreciate psyche nursing by analyzing different attitudes not only of 2nd coursers but the rest of your classmates including your professors!!!
I second the motion msspowers! I was able to appreciate psyche by analyzing my classmates' background. Why they are such a bully. So now, whenever someone bullies me, I always try to discover the reason behind their action. And the rootword is always, "love (with or without) and insecurities. ALthough they have no right to act that way, they just dont know how to handle it so they act that way.

Hi, i don't have anything against 2nd coursers but just want to share my ideas and story.
Maturity is one big difference between 2nd courser and a student who just graduated from high school. Maturity includes good judgement and rationalization on certain things. 2nd courser usually ages from 20s and higher and sometimes they're already in 30s or 40s and even older than their professors/ instructors. Younger students who just graduated from high school and tooked up nursing are still teenagers. See the big difference? differentiating them would be in big numbers.
2nd coursers already knows where to go if they need something. example: thesis, of course they already know where to get a prepared thesis while young studs have just started learning on their basic step to know things including their ownselves.
I am not a second courser but my sis (older than me), hehehehe. She once told me about a young stud doing something on a ward and she criticizing about her young classmates' act/skill in the ward. hahahaha. I did not comment anything but just listened on her story. But believe me, although 2nd coursers would tend to show as if they are superior and knows a lot of things, they have a higher anxieties than younger studs. Some of them are ashame to ask things they need to know and understand on a certain subject. Some of them even has a higher anxiety level than younger ones especially when taking major exams. hehehehe because it would be a shame for them to fail while their younger sisters/ brother has passed the exams on one sitting. hahahahaha. And more so, sad to say that even though they excel in their class (2nd coursers), they really have a prob on getting a job in a hospital. Its even harder for 2nd courser to work without pay for 6months and the trainings as compared with younger nurses.
my eldest sis is really good, she speaks very well in english as compared to me with my grammars & accent (hahaha). I can't even speak very very fluent english unlike my eldest sis but I'm helping her right now, telling her the do's and dont's on ielts (of course with respect and not bossy hahahah).
I therefore conclude that::nuke: some 2nd coursers may be arrogant, superior or have attitude problem but they also have their own fears more than we know. And some younger nurses may seem crazy with their decisions, thinking and acts but its because of their immaturities and lack of life experiences as compared to 2nd coursers.

I don't know why we should label a certain group & generalize the attributes of that particular group. Whether 1st courser or 2nd courser let's not generalize. It just breeds discrimination.
Like i said, 2nd courser or not. . . All of us should be treated the same way. Well each person has different personality so i'll leave it that way. God Bless all of us! Ora et Labora. . .
Just want to clarify to you dearest Dizzydean that people who posted here dont generalize second courser. We just shared our experiences with second coursers that some are good some are not that really good. Because no matter we do, despite their attitudes, like what GSG9ers said, we all have different personality. ANd one of the qualities of a good nurse is being flexible to all personalities and handle it... : )

I am a second courser too. Med tech being my first course. I think our assertiveness as second coursers could be misinterpreted as an attitude or personality problem. Yeah, I've met some "psyche case" classmates lol, but I chose to be with the saner ones.
