Attendance

Sorry this is so long but I really want to get a perspective on how

other hospital's attendance policies work. Consider what our hospital implemented this year:

There is no longer ANY excused

absence.

Absences and tardiness are assigned point values as follows:

1. Any call-in, whether a week before your shift or ten minutes before your shift--1 point

A weekend shift is 2 points.

2. If you leave after half your shift is worked, you get half the point value.

3. If you arrive at work sick, and are told you must leave---yep--still get the points.

4. A tardy is1/2 point; weekend tardy is 1 point.

5. If you, say, have a week long illness-you accrue points for each day in a row missed. So a 4 day stomach bug/flu/etc. could get you 6 points if it crossed a weekend.

6. The ONLY way to avoid points is to be an inpatient or to have FMLA papers (which they may or may not approve.)

7. If there is a giant wreck, bad weather, etc. that causes multiple people to be late, HR may excuse that "if they deem it affected enough people."

You are terminated upon earning 14 points in a two year period. So, if you ONLY work weekends, you can be sick three weekends in 24 months and then you are fired with the next absence.

There are obviously always some who call in frequently and it is frustrating. But this policy is horrible!! We have already lost some amazing nurses who either were sick themselves or had sick kids a few days and have been fired.

Our manager actually encouraged anyone who can to get FMLA for something so that they will not be penalized if they call in. People are scrambling to get it for migraines, asthma, etc. just for security.

The main issue is that WE TAKE CARE OF CRITICALLY ILL BABIES!!! And nurses are literally being forced to come to work sick, because you can't risk needing your points later if you are sicker, have a car wreck, etc!!

We want to warn everyone not to come to our hospital! We do not want your baby to be put at risk because of this.

It is so frustrating and demeaning to everyone who is a loyal employee. Loyalty is fading fast.

We we really want to know if other nurses are being treated this way. We feel helpless and literally have no recourse it seems.

Looking forward to your feedback :-)

You might think about running this by a lawyer that deals with employment issues. If there is a state health agency that oversees licensure, filing a complaint on the basis that the hospital is putting patient safety at risk by forcing personnel to work while sick.

The whole thing is just plain demented, imo. I'll be happy to tell them so, but I doubt it will help! Stupid administration.

Thanks for the hint Ruby...since it is right below yours....this is one of the reasons I don't come on here much...people micromanaging others posts. Sorry.

My hosptial policy is exactly the same, and I have to admit that I have come to worker sicker then I should. Never with a fever, but I still would have called in if I were still at my old job. It makes us feel like children. I was shocked when our managers solution was to get FMLA. I always thought that was for people who had surgery, cancer, other serious illnesses. Ridiculous.

We have people who abuse intermittant FMLA , so now if you call off on Fri-Sun you get to make that day up on the next schedule. Is what it is. And the union for other workers follow this also at our institute. When I am

sick sick I get a note to cover my butt. Sucks.

Does your facility require employees on FMLA leave to make up missed time or only those on non-FMLA absences? Hopefully not because that's a huge FMLA no-no.

It's so pathetic that educated, intelligent, unselfish adults can be treated so poorly for getting sick (chances are from a sick patient or coworker). There are always a few bad apples who will abuse the system, but I'm a firm believer that the same uncaring, non compassionate hospitals who treat legitimate sick time as a mortal sin only reap what they sow; abuse of FMLA is more times than not self-inflicted by hospitals who force their employees to choose between their wellbeing and jobs.

Intermittant FMLA call offs on the weekends are made up. This was run by HR. I am not kidding you when I say that before

this rule, we had a crazy number of call offs on weekends. A few were fired due to posting pictures and such of parties they were attending when they called off.

One piece of advice: The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Every time I think something is unfair, I get to squeaking that wheel. Case in point. I worked with a nurse who called in 6 times in one month. I worked 11 days straight. She called in again. I was told u had to go in and work her shift. Haha I made them pay me double. That check was over 3000.00 and they never told me I had to go in again for her. Get to squeaking!!!

IttyBittyBabyRN, I think we may work for the same hospital system. It's really pretty ridiculous. I forgot my badge one weekend day- that's a point. Got sick on a Sunday-Monday- that's 3 points. Had to go home sick a couple of weeks ago because I was vomiting- another point. Forgot to badge out after a horrible night- 1/2 a point. That's in 7 months of working there! I am so so nervous about my points now that it gives me anxiety even taking care of super sick people (currently on a tele floor, but interviewing in NICU next week).
