Can atarax be given IV? IV push or Ivpb?
I have learned to only give it IM (or PO) and the vial says IM only.
What is your experience??
Thanks.

have given vistaril or atarax with demerol IM to help the effects of the demerol. Never heard of it IV personally, I thought it was never given IV could be wrong.

Atarax is not given IV because it is caustic and would ruin the vein.

Check with your institution but, vistaril can be given IV but it is often avoided if possible, however it is on my formulary as IV and I have had some patients recieve IV vistaril.

our hospital policy is that it is never to be given iv- they stress it at least 3 times a year and have a "trick question" on the medication test about it as well.

Never IV. Compression syndrome from IV Vistaril is not pretty. Neither is the litigation that follows.

Nope, no IV. We have a strict no-IM policy on my floor. We'll occasionally use Atarax for rigors or reactions. If the patient can't take it PO, they don't get it.

No IV administration. IM or po only. We had a nurse on another floor get fired for giving IV. Not only did she give it IV, the order was for IM administration.
