At Clinic, Offered Hospital Position

I just started a position at a Community Clinic and have been there for 4 days.   Yesterday, I was offered a Med/Surge Tele position and Ambulatory Care Services/ PACU Position.   Both positions have the same rate and is double what I am making now and has better benefits. Also, the nurses are part of a union and may get a raise in rate. I am leaning towards the Ambulatory Care Services/PACU RN position.  The thing is my husband wants me to continue working at the clinic until I start at the hospital September 9th.  Do you think it's wrong to wait 3 weeks to a month to tell my current job that I am leaving or should I tell them now meaning tomorrow?   Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Specializes in Med nurse in med-surg., float, HH, and PDN.

Why does your husband want you to wait?

He said at least it is income.   Also, he isn't currently working and basically is depending on me for income.

Aaaah, I see. Thanks for responding.

The way I see it, September 9th is not that far away. The clinic would probably appreciate some advance notice.Would giving notice mean you have to stop working at the clinic right then? Can't you give them a notice that would take effect on a certain date specified by you? If you could work up to the point where you'll start at the new position, you won't be without a paycheck for too long.

Best wishes for it all turning out well.

Yes, that is exactly what my husband said.   So I would be given my notice the week before Labor Day.

That is very likely not going to happen. It wouldn't happen in any hospital I've worked anyway, and the principle is the same anywhere/everywhere that an orientation period is required: They will not want to pay someone's training hours when that person ultimately isn't going to work there. I think that's fair.

Extenuating circumstances are what they are and I'm not judging anyone for their circumstances. But strictly my opinion about when an employer should be notified that an employee in training won't be staying is....right away. I just think it's the right thing to do. Not telling them is basically being paid under false pretenses, unless you have hit the ground running and are already able to do the role for which you were hired independently. In that case it would help them if you stayed while they re-posted the position, which surely they would let you know when you give your resignation.

You are entitled to your opinion.   But right now my husband isn't working and I am the only one getting income.   I have bad feelings about waiting, but I also have to worry about both my son and husband.   We just moved to a new place and still need to get acclimated to our surroundings.

Why did you ask for opinions?

I just wanted feedback from other nurses in the same situation.   Thanks for your reply.

The standard is to give 2 weeks notice.

Is the clinic you are working for affiliated with a bigger medical system? You really should give the proper 2 week notice at minimum regardless, but if the clinic is part of a big system and not an independent then you really need to give proper notice.

If you don't there's a real possibility of ending up on a do not rehire list and that would not be limited to just the clinic you quit but the entire organization.  You really don't want to burn that bridge unnecessarily.

Thank you for your response.  I think I am going to give 2 weeks.   They are not a big corporation/company.   It's  sad because I am starting to get to know the people even though it's been 9 days.   I feel like such a bad person.   But my husband keeps telling me it will be all right.   I am also in Hawaii which is harder at times because people know each other.
