ASU 2016 Applicants - Which Cohort?

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hey everyone,

I am applying by the Feb. 1st deadline for the cohorts beginning summer/fall this year (2016). I take the TEAS in a week, so I'm all sorts of nervous, but I'm having trouble deciding how to rank my preference of cohorts on my application. I'm debating on whether or not to put the regular downtown cohort as my number 1, or the Mayo cohort as number 1. VA would be my third, and the summer program would be my fourth.

I'm really torn. I've heard great things about Mayo, and it would be amazing to work there after I'm done with school, but I feel like you lose out on the "college experience", as well as a variety of clinicals. I'd just be happy to be accepted into the program, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to get advice/opinions from others in my situation!

Thanks :)

Well that definitely makes me feel better lol thank you. I've been going over the ATI manual every day for a few weeks, so I'm hoping I'll be comfortable when I take the actual test. Thank you! I hope you're right :)

Slsimps4,

I used solely the TEAS book and noticed that the math, reading, and grammar/English portions were exactly the same as the test. If you understand these, you'll do great!!

My only tip would be once you know the other three sections, really study the science, as this was the only section on the exam that was most different than the book. I had a ton of questions that were mentioned in the book, but some of them were much more in depth on the exam than I thought they'd be. So if you need to, use Kahn academy. I'm glad I did, because I thought I was over studying, but I actually wasn't. If you still have time left to study, watch videos on them. I spent hours on Kahn academy really making sure I understood everything. :)

Let us know how you did. I'm sure you'll do great. Just take a deep breath and relax. And no matter what, take a break between sections. Ignore the feeling to just continue on and get it over with. Take a break and clear your head for a minute. :)

Good luck!

Hi, I'm also applying for fall 2016 traditional program. Wondering how others are scoring on the TEAS?? My application score will be 1.89

Hi echilada5! I scored around an 87% on my teas exam, and studied for about 3-4 weeks. If you have a 1.89, that's an awesome application score!! :) I was told by advising that the low for the last two semesters for advancement was 1.7599. So if you have a 1.89, it sounds like you're in great shape! I'm hopeful as well, as I have around a 1.87. Good luck!

Well, I took the test and got a 79.3% :/ Definitely not as good as I was hoping for. My overall application score is 1.763. The cutoff for the last 5 years has been lower than my score, so I'm crossing my fingers that it doesn't jump up this year. Just have to wait and see now, which is terrible. Thanks for all the help, everyone! Good luck

Hi slsimps4! From what I hear, an 80% isn't bad at all! Remember that with this cycle, there are 20-30 extra spots because of Mayo Clinic accepting 20-30 more students every other fall, which lands on this fall. With the extra spots, you have a better chance!! =D

Well thank you for the reassurance. I need it lol. I'm just glad to have it other with honestly. I was stressing out about the test for so long. And yes, definitely! I put Mayo as my first choice actually. Hoping that I get into that one. My advisor told me that with the exception of the last two years, the average cut off score was around a 1.650. Hopefully it stays around there this time year.

Lol, I totally get it. I was studying for about 3-4 weeks over the summer from the TEAS and it was sooo stressful. I was so glad it was over when I finished it. The good news is that ASU is so competitive, that we tend to have really high GPA and test scores. So if we didn't get in, we have a really high chance of getting in elsewhere. BUT, I think we'll be totally fine! More spots=lower advancement score. I also heard a lot of people lost their direct admit status for our cohort, so that helps us too!

Hello everyone, Looks as though I've joined this party late, I just took my Teas V test on Tues. and didn't do nearly as well as I hoped. :(But we have been remodeling our home and I literally had 3 days to study before taking the test so I guess I can't kill myself over the score too much. I just hope it is high enough to get in with my GPA. My GPA is 3.91 and my my Teas V score was only 80%. I think if I had a week to actually read the book and do the practice tests I could have pulled a 85-87% on the test but I went in to test after only doing 3 practice tests and not even opening the book to read. Our remodel was supposed to be done by end of December and wasn't finished till middle of last week! I'm totally OCD and could not focus to study or do anything but try to get my house back in order hahaha!! So my application score is a 1.77 and my first choice is Summer start downtown. I'm praying I can get in with that score. :( I think the guy I went over my app with said we might not hear back till April?? I'm going to be so stressed waiting how about you guys? What was your first choice?

Hi Lisak1983! It's never too late to join the party. :) An 80% is actually a very impressive TEAS score, especially with only 3 days of studying! I spent 3 weeks not only 3 days and achieved only 7% higher. Cut yourself a break, you did awesome! =)

We'll hear back in early April (first week) about acceptance! It'll definitely be a long wait... but fingers crossed! What did you choose as a second choice and why did you choose the summer session?

Thank you so much, :) I appreciate it!! I'm super hard on myself most of the time. I picked summer session as my first choice because as an adult learner who is starting all over from scratch I really need to be done and working to help support my family. I was an esthetician several years ago and when the market collapsed I had to close down my studio and start all over. I wanted to go the paramedic route but unless you work for the fire dept you make about $12-14 which you just can't survive on nor are the stress levels worth it. Plus most fire depts want you to be a fire medic and I have no desire to run into a burning building. LOL My second choice is Downtown fall, third is Veterans Hosp. and fourth is Mayo(purely because of the distance) I live out by PIR racetrack in the west valley so the trip would just be too far to afford the gas costs and travel time on top of everything else. How about you?

I applied for the summer cohort. My advancement score is 1.771.

I'm hoping we hear something end of Feb. beginning of March... I don't remember what the advisor said about that but maybe it will be a confirmation email?
