Assessments and the Need to knows about different med surge patients

Really? I'm not trying to be mean but the best way I've learned things is to look it up just as in nursing school. Do you have a mentor you can speak to about these concerns? I hope you're able to get some help in understanding some of these common med surg disease processes and management.

Come on your not serious ? If you are a practicing nurse RN or Lpn you should not have to ask these questions ! Esp. working a year in med-surg. What nursing school did you graduate from ?? "IMPORTANT ASSESSMENTS that SHOULD BE MADE" if you don't know what you should be assessing with any of the diagnosis you listed then you should not be practicing as a nurse. Student nurses are taught what to assess. What to "look for" You are asking for" NEED TO KNOW FACTS " your not serious are you ??

What does your job consist off ?? What are you responsible for? Do you do direct patient care ? Do you document? what are you work evaluations like ? Do your co-workers know your lack of experience ? Are you really responsible for CVA, diabetic patients, post-op patients, etc. I am really blown away that you state " NEED TO KNOW FACTS " I feel bad that you did not get the proper schooling and training you need to practice as a nurse. That was a real disservice to you by the nursing school and the facility you are working at. I would suggest you take remedial classes in disease process and assessement skills. Try on-line courses. Good luck in your career !

If you want to know what are the more common disease and tx then you should just look them up yourself, that's best way to learn. If you are considering a career in Med/Surg then maybe the ANCC credentialing exam for med/surg might be what you are looking for. go on one of the many nursing sites or even amazon and search for Med/Surg certification

You can find all this information on the internet. For example you can look up GI bleed symptoms and you will get lots of information.

You can start out with a book called Nursing Assessment made Incredibly easy and the Washington Manual of Internal Medicine. Field Guide to Bedside Diagnosis. Some of these are medical texts for medical students but if you really want to learn what you are looking for and how to really assess a patient you need to know this information.

In addition, I would suggest that you ask your manager if you can spend a say in radiology with one of the radiologist reading X-rays. It will be a great learning experience for you and I personally think that every nurse needs some exposure on how to look at an e-ray.
