Asheville NC what is it like?

I am thinking of possibly moving to Asheville NC and I would like to know what it is like there? In addition, I am political and I lean towards the left on most issues so if anyone can tell me if I would fit in there, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin,

Asheville is a left leaning town for the most part, if you go to citidata.com you'll see the forum page for western NC and there are tons of postings about the area.

As to the VA med center there, not sure, but my mom know's several people that work there and they seem to like it. I'm considering applying for some non nursing jobs there myself.

Good luck on the move, wherever it takes you.

I've never actually been there, only drove past on my way to Nashville, but boy is it beautiful from what I saw. Straight out of a scenery calendar- the leaves on the trees were orange, red and green. Curvy roads though- verrry curvy. (Driving through the mountains/interstate) A real shock to a Manhattan driver like myself.

manhattan, eh? well, asheville is definitely a "lefty" town. very small, but a lot of progressive ideology. there are many holistic/organic/natural stores, workshops and co-ops. the biltmore is a popular tourist destination too. if you went to the citidata website, it is a good place to start. http://www.mountainx.com/ here is another site that may interest you. as for me, i live in tennessee and only work in asheville, but it is a neat area. good luck, manhattan driver. you won't miss city driving too much though. you will be mowed down just as badly here. the south is full of leadfoot people!:twocents:

I'm from Asheville, although I'm in Durham now. Leaving Asheville has made me appreciate it even more....although I'm reluctant to say that...so many people have moved to the area recently that I feel like it is a secret that I need to keep so more people don't wind up there too. The town is small, and, unfortunately, the population is expanding much more quickly than the city itself. Asheville is progressive and lefty, but go outside the city limits just a tad, and you run into some serious mountain folk...evangelists and hard-core rednecks.

I hear Mission Hospital is a really great place to work, though.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

i guess it depends on who you talk to. i was born in asheville, and lived there for many years, and some parts are still bible believing communities. i havent lived there in many years, but my parents are moving back in august and they say that it has changed, but alot is still the same. my cousin works at memorial mission hospital as an rn, and loves it. i think there are alot of opportunites for nurses there. it is indeed one of the most beautiful cities i have been to.

I absolutely love Asheville, NC. It's one of my fav cities. I have been there many times on vacation and would love to live near there one day. I couldn't afford to live directly in Asheville, as housing prices have skyrocketed in the last 10 -15 years. There are lots of nice communities around Asheville though that offer much cheaper housing.

If you like the outdoors you will love Asheville. The mountains, rivers, and parks offers tons of stuff to do. I also like the people there. It's very Bohemian, open minded, environmentally minded, etc. The last time I was there I actually felt safe walking around downtown at night also. Can you tell I love the town? lol
