I can't be of much help to you as I wanted to be a nurse since I was a small child....my dad says age 3. I always wanted the little nurses bag with the plastic stethescope and candy pills for gifts. My grandmother would bring home plastic/ paper med cups, and anything else disposable if she went to the hospital, and I played with them for years. I graduated early from high school so I could go to nursing school and graduated at the ripe old age of 19.

I have been a nurse longer than I was not. Born to be a nurse??? Who knows, but it was my choice, not anyone elses. If you are not dedicated to getting there and staying there, nursing is not the place to be. It is something you must do for yourself to make it worthwhile.

OK I'll admit it.... I was never the person who always dreamed of being a nurse. I was a a State University majoring in Biology and I LOVED anatomy and physiology. After 3 years my mom asked me what I was planning on doing with this degree- I had no clue! I did not want to teach and research was not very exciting either. To be completely honest, I hadn't really put much thought into after college because I was having so much darn FUN being young! So my mom says to me "why don't you be a nurse- they make good money and you will always have a job."

And so it began........ I entered the nursing program the next semester figuring I had to do something! I must admit I had my moments during nursing school. I loved the lecture and classwork part, but I was really questioning my decision after the first year of clinicals-----I hated it! Luckily, one of my instructors introduced me to the wonderful world of NICU! Now this was more like it! I was able to do a semester externship and was put at ease that I had not made some terrible mistake going to nursing school. I graduated with honors.

I landed a job in the PICU of a MAJOR Children's Hospital right out of school and knew I had found my calling! 12 years later, here I am. And my mom was right!!:redbeathe

Well I could say that I was "pushed" into it by me mam, but the truth is that she got the application forms for me and after that it was up to me.

Oh, I ought to mention that, apparently, it was something I had wittered on about doing since I was eight.

I was motivated by my own desire and want, I didn't grow up wantingto be a nurse, but I always admired them and loved hearing my great aunt talk about how much nursing has changed in the ast 50+ yrs, she was one of the first to recieve a BSN from UofMichigan and she's seen alot! I didn't start looking into nursing school untill after I'd married and had kids and decided I wanted more out of a "job" I wanted a career, somewhere that I could learn and continue to grow while having a positive impact on other people's lives, once I decided to go for it my husband threw all his support behind me and I jumped in, sink or swim so to speak, all the pieces fell into place one after another and now I'm a brand new RN on an awesome med-surg floor with the best co-workers I could ever have in a facility where eat the young mentality is despised and desn't occur ever! My NM even called me while I was in orientation to tell me congratulations on passing NCLEX and to tell me she already printed my license for me lol
